Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose:

The purpose of the qualification is to educate purchasing, supply chain, and operational practitioners in all types of business organizations. Qualifying learners will be able to work effectively in purchasing, operations, and any position in supply chain management in business organizations in various industries and sectors. Qualifying learners can demonstrate knowledge, specific skills, and applied competence within opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity, and will function in the field associated with purchasing, the integrated supply chain, and operations in business organizations.

Rationale:

Supply chain management is increasingly important to government, organizations, and companies in a competitive market across a variety of sectors. This qualification is designed to meet the industry need for purchasing, supply chain, and operations managers in all sectors. It is designed to provide the learner with generic management, human relationships, financial, and specific supply chain and operations knowledge and skills which can be applied in different sectors. It provides the learners with skills to become competent supply chain and operations workers and managers on both functional and strategic levels.

Outcomes

  1. Gather process and record relevant information and compile basic statements of comprehensive income, statements of changes in equity and statements of financial position.
  2. Solve basic economic problems in different economic systems, how households and firms take decisions as well as how prices are determined.
  3. Develop a fundamental knowledge base of psychological processes in the work context that contribute to the improvement of interpersonal work relationships and organisational effectiveness.
  4. Solve basic problems relating to the general principles of the law of contract in South Africa.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the individual functional areas of business management which ultimately form a synergistic whole that directs the business towards its goals.
  6. Develop a solid knowledge base of the necessary values and attitudes in the field of personality or individual differences in the work context.
  7. Provide knowledge, applied competence and skills related to general management principles.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of the field of purchasing management.
  9. Demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental principles of financial management theory and practice.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of the modern integrated approach to the management of the supply of materials and services to organisations and insight into the impact. Critical Cross-Field Outcomes: This qualification allows all the Critical Cross-Field Outcomes to be addressed.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Apply the nature of accounting theory, principles, accounting policy, practice, and procedures.
  • Explain the concepts of income and expenditure to determine gross and net profits (or losses) and their effect on owner's equity.
  • Analyze transactions in an entity's books, record them, and prepare a statement of financial position from the basic accounting equation.
  • Prepare ledger accounts, trial balance, and financial statements.
  • Explain the closing-off procedure to determine profit or loss and prepare financial statements.
  • Discuss the importance of inventory and how entries related to inventory are recorded.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Conceptualize and apply the main economic problems in different economic systems.
  • Use diagrams to explain how the economy functions.
  • Explain the interaction between consumers and producers in a perfectly competitive goods market.
  • Conceptualize, evaluate, and apply pricing decisions of firms under perfect and imperfect market conditions in the short- and long run.
  • Identify factors affecting the labor market in perfectly competitive and imperfect labor markets.

  • Explain human behavior in the work context.
  • Discuss biological developmental and psychological processes as they manifest among individuals in the work context.
  • Evaluate social processes as they manifest among individuals and groups in the work context.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Apply general principles of the law of contract within a legal framework to real-life situations.
  • Utilize relevant sources to solve basic legal problems regarding the functioning of the South African legal system and the general principles of the law of contract.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Apply financial management concepts and principles relating to financial analysis, investment decisions, and financing decisions.
  • Manage business operations using sound operational activities, techniques, and methods to optimize input transformation into outputs.
  • Plan, organize, and control the purchasing and control function to help achieve business objectives.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:

  • Discuss the principles and assumptions underlying different personality theories.
  • Discuss psychological well-being and maladjustment, including work adjustment and maladjustment.
  • Resolve personality and individual differences with particular reference to work-related issues.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7:

  • Identify and analyze elements of organization design and authority relationships in organizations.
  • Apply all aspects of the planning process, including goal setting, strategic planning, and the function of managers.
  • Use the rational decision-making model to make effective decisions.

  • Apply knowledge and skills related to the operational processes and management of the purchasing function in an organization.
  • Utilize strategic management of the supply base, including selection and evaluation, in accordance with the strategic sourcing approach.
  • Identify and apply areas of application in purchasing and supply management.

  • Identify and analyze the managerial finance function and its relationship to economics and accounting.
  • Apply financial management concepts and principles related to financial statement analysis.
  • Apply time value money techniques to value financial instruments within a risk-return framework.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 10:

  • Investigate the origins and elements of supply chain management.
  • Apply the importance of supplier partnerships and strategic alliances.
  • Explain the importance of customer relations in the supply chain management approach.
  • Discuss the overall importance of process integration in supply chain management.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Integrate learning and assessment.
  • Provide self-assessment tasks with feedback in study guides.
  • Utilize a combination of written and multiple-choice assignments based on learning material.
  • Offer feedback through written comments, suggested solutions, and mark plans.
  • Focus on smaller sections of work and a limited number of outcomes.
  • Allocate 10% of marks to assignment contributions.
  • Conduct examinations to test the integration of knowledge for each module.
  • Provide supplementary examinations for learners meeting specific criteria.
  • Ensure all assessments integrate knowledge, skills, attitudes, and applied competence.
