Qualification Overview

With the global threat of crime looming large, the deployment of substantial resources by the industry to safeguard people and assets underscores its significance. In South Africa, the private security sector has seen rapid growth, catering primarily to the interests of commerce and industry to sustain profitability, economic growth, and job creation while fostering community welfare and stability. This Advanced Diploma aims to enhance the knowledge, expertise, skills, and competencies of security risk managers, benefitting South African society as a whole.

  7. Conduct investigations in the security service industry.
  8. Apply research methodology in the field of Security Science.
  9. Implement Strategic Management to advance service in the security industry. Critical Cross-Field Outcomes: This qualification enables all the Critical Cross-Field Outcomes to be addressed.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • Identify different sectors within the security industry
  • Explain problems and issues from these sectors
  • Compare the nature and impact of issues in various sectors
  • Identify interlinked security systems that apply to most sectors

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • Facilitate the formulation of a security policy
  • Apply a policy implementation framework
  • Implement Minimum Information Security Standards (MISS) and Minimum Physical Security Standards (MPSS)
  • Develop government tender procedures and outsourcing procedures of security service providers
  • Use the cost-benefit analysis process
  • Describe Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and performance agreements

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • Implement project management processes in the security environment
  • Employ principles of the Security Risk Management process
  • Generate physical security systems and executive risk management procedures
  • Formulate security strategies for a corporate enterprise from concepts of business continuity and resilience management

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • Prepare job descriptions, policies, and procedures for Control Room Operator and Operations
  • Install the convergence of CCTV surveillance systems, security, and the law
  • Apply technology to coordinate the flow of incident-based information
  • Implement Security IT developments
  • Prevent computer-related crimes
  • Apply Minimum Information Security Standards relevant to IT and the Access to Information Act

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 5:

  • Explain current PSIRA regulations, registrations, and training skills programmes
  • Evaluate both manual and automatic approaches depending on the security infrastructure
  • Explain legislative requirements on labour disputes, gender/equality
  • Identify the roles of latest trends in private security in crime prevention/community safety

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 6:

  • Apply the principles of corporate governance (King Reports I-III) and the Public Finance Management Act
  • Develop corruption prevention strategies in a company from a given scenario/case study
  • Administer vetting of contract companies/personnel integrity testing/personnel screening/background checks and polygraph

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 7:

  • Practice confidential investigations, insurance investigations, investigating corruption in the public and private sector, and due diligence investigation
  • Apply advanced theory, current knowledge, and expertise in the security service industry
  • Develop purposeful and creative plans to seek solutions based on theory and proven methods within the sector

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 8:

  • Select different research approaches, data collection methods, data analysis methods, and writing a research-based report
  • Plan and conduct research inquiry based on appropriate research designs, methods, techniques, and technologies
  • Identify and demarcate research themes appropriately
  • Display skill in extrapolating key findings, justifiable conclusions, and making feasible recommendations

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 9:

  • Generate a vision statement, mission statement, goals, and objectives
  • Identify strategic issues and apply scenario analysis

Integrated Assessment:

  • Demonstrate the ability to engage in the security risk management environment in a selected and integrative way
  • Deal effectively with divergent and 'random' demands related to work operations
  • Provide evidence of achieving the purpose of the qualification as a whole at the time of the award of the qualification
