Bachelor of Accounting

Business, Commerce and Management Studies - Finance Economics and Accounting

Purpose and Rationale

Qualification:

  • Purpose:

    • The Bachelor of Accounting qualification aims to provide graduates with a technically focused education that equips them with the necessary skills to analyze financial information, audit data, maintain records, and scrutinize budgets. This will enable them to pursue rewarding careers in various sectors and develop leadership qualities.
  • Rationale:

    • Research by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) has highlighted a shortage of accountants in South Africa. This degree will address this shortage by aligning with SAICA's requirements. The introduction of this qualification will provide two distinct degree options: the Bachelor of Accounting for aspiring chartered accountants (CA), and the Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting for a more general education in accountancy. The Bachelor of Commerce: Accounting allows registration with other professional bodies besides SAICA. Having separate qualifications will help the institution differentiate between CA-focused education and broader accounting education, meeting various requirements effectively. This differentiation will enable the institution to tailor the Bachelor of Commerce: Accounting program to develop accountants beyond Chartered Accountants (CA's) effectively.
