Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Overview

Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to provide an opportunity for learners to broaden their knowledge in German within the Faculty of Arts. This provides an opportunity to read extensively, to become acquainted with some of the classic texts in the German discipline, to become involved in a conversation with its most important thinkers, and to take part in these debates with confidence. The solid basis acquired prepares the learner for Postgraduate research. This qualification gives provision for an opportunity not only to broaden but also to deepen insight into the discipline as specified.

Rationale

German is an academic and vocational discipline that equips learners in the German language and civilization. Learners are also provided with the skills to understand the target language and culture within the wider context of the South African multilingual and multicultural environment. In its own right, the German qualification provides learners with a valuable and directly relevant qualification for careers in the South African diplomatic service, international trade and commerce, government organizations that deal with these areas, tourism, publishing (translation), and any career that involves contact with German-speakers or German text.

Within the South African context, it provides vital experience of a Western culture that is of economic importance to South Africa and generally enables learners in terms of the SAQA critical outcomes at a level appropriate to the qualification.

Outcomes

  1. Analyse, synthesise and critically evaluate a substantial amount of information in German.
  2. Communicate competently in German in a professional situation.
  3. If the translation option synthesises, understand the mechanics involved in the translation process (methodology and application) as well as the practical use of translation in a professional environment.
  4. Work both individually and as a member of a group.
  5. Make use of the Internet in conducting research.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria:

  1. Exit Level Outcome 1: Analyse, synthesise, and critically evaluate texts presented in German.
  2. Exit Level Outcome 2: Communicate efficiently in German (both spoken and written).
  3. Exit Level Outcome 3: Translate competently from and to German without distorting the original meaning of the source text.
  4. Exit Level Outcome 4: Work independently and within a group.
  5. Exit Level Outcome 5: Utilise the internet and other sources to search for information.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Integrated Assessment: Integrated assessment will be appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved.

Assessment Methods:

  • Formative Assessment:

    • Four assessments including literature surveys, essays, presentations, and research proposals.
    • All assessments will contribute to the final mark.
  • Summative Assessment:

    • A final examination at the end of the semester.
