Communication Studies and Language - Language
Purpose:
The Department of Modern Foreign Languages aims to expand its Mandarin programme to the Postgraduate level as part of a strategic initiative. Since its introduction as a first-year module in 2000, Mandarin has become a major option within the Bachelor of Arts Humanities and Bachelor of Arts Language and Culture programmes. The new Postgraduate programme will align with the Honours programmes in German and French already offered by the Department.
Rationale:
It is imperative for the Department of Modern Foreign Languages to diversify its academic offerings by introducing Mandarin at the Postgraduate level. The goal is to train graduates who possess expertise in cultural mediation between South Africa and the People's Republic of China. With 22 third-year students enrolled in the Mandarin programme in 2008 (more than in German and French), many have shown interest in pursuing further studies at the Postgraduate level. This initiative will meet the growing demand for advanced Mandarin language and cultural studies within the Department.
