Qualification Overview

Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to promote the development of life-long learning skills and assist learners in developing principles to guide their work activities. It also aims to provide learners with methods to apply knowledge necessary for sustainable agriculture in rural development. Additionally, the qualification aims to qualify learners to make informed decisions, address challenges, and consider scientific and social dimensions in the field. The program intends to produce learners who can act ethically and professionally, think analytically, evaluate relevant information in the workplace, take responsibility to solve problems, and consequently support sustainable agriculture and rural development in South Africa. It will enable learners to strengthen extension and advisory services and play a leading role in the field. The qualifying learner will be competent to work in various sectors such as government, agribusiness, private consultancies, extension projects, education, and rural development agencies, as well as in their own businesses.

Rationale:

The Advanced Diploma in Sustainable Agriculture in Rural Development was designed to address the need for intensified training in agriculture and to enhance sustainable agriculture and rural development efforts. It offers the opportunity to upgrade the skills of extension officers, farmers, teachers, consultants, and community leaders involved in the field, enabling them to work effectively and efficiently. The qualifying learner will be equipped to play a role in scientifically managing key issues in Africa, such as poverty alleviation, sustainable conservation and utilization of natural resources, and the production of quality food for human consumption, as well as offering solutions for related problems.

This can be achieved through initiatives such as community gardens, food banks, and agricultural training programs.
  • Support structures for self-sufficiency: Creating support structures for self-sufficiency in rural life involves empowering community members with the skills and resources needed to sustain themselves in various aspects of life, including agriculture, healthcare, and education.
