Purpose and Rationale

As indicated in the overall qualification statement, the focus will be on the essential skills and knowledge required specifically in the discipline of Biochemistry. This includes a strong foundation in chemistry, biology, and mathematics, as well as a deep understanding of biochemical principles and techniques.

In addition, proficiency in laboratory skills such as protein purification, chromatography, spectrophotometry, and other analytical techniques would be necessary. Knowledge of molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, DNA sequencing, and gene expression analysis, would also be essential in the field of Biochemistry.

Furthermore, critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to analyze and interpret complex data are crucial for success in this discipline. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are also important for presenting research findings and collaborating with colleagues in the field.

Overall, a strong foundation in the principles of Biochemistry, coupled with practical laboratory skills and critical thinking abilities, are key components of a successful career in this discipline.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the Biochemistry with particular reference to the areas of proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and carbohydrates### and advanced knowledge, insight and practical skills in the areas of cell biology and recombinant DNA technology.
  2. Use Biochemistry to solve biological, chemical & physical problems, using appropriate principles, tools and logical reasoning - in particular, mastery of advanced protein chemistry and theory of biophysical technology, accompanied by practical skills in modern protein technology and practical skills in modern techniques including hydrodynamic behaviour of macromolecules, radioisotope technology, ligand binding and advanced bio-molecular separation technology.
  3. Investigate Biochemical phenomena, organise it and apply it to real-world situations and in particular, have acquired the basic skills needed in conducting original research to completion.
  4. Work effectively in a team to investigate and report on Biochemical phenomena.
  5. Be able to effectively handle the literature in specialised fields of Biochemistry, and to effectively communicate scientific information verbally and in writing.
  6. Demonstrate effective and responsible use of safety, health and environmental issues while practising both in the laboratory and the field and in particular, have acquired advanced general laboratory skills in a biochemical environment.
  7. Use knowledge from the physical, chemical and biological disciplines to solve problems across a variety of contexts.
  8. Exposure to examples, of Biochemical knowledge-application, in the community.

Assessment Criteria

Integrated Assessment:

  • Assessment Practice: Formative. Practical.
  • Lab report: Students will be required to submit lab reports based on their practical work in the lab.
  • Seminars: Students will participate in seminars to discuss their findings and research.
  • Essays: Essays will be assigned to gauge students' understanding and ability to critically analyze the subject matter.
  • Oral presentation: Students will have to present their research findings orally to the class.

Assessment Practice:

  • Assessment Practice: Summative. Examination.
  • Examination: A final examination will be conducted at the end of the course to assess students' overall understanding and knowledge of the subject.
