Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The purpose of the Bachelor of Arts Honours qualification in Biokinetics is to provide suitable learners with appropriate post-learner research skills and qualifications in the field of Biokinetics, especially as it is a rapidly developing field for learners from previously disadvantaged communities.

Rationale:

The qualification provides learners with the required knowledge, skills, and attitudes (ethics) related to describing, assessing, explaining, facilitating, and developing human function in multi-cultural and sport/exercise contexts. Additionally, the qualification develops benchmarking core and derived knowledge, assessment, intervention, professional ethics, research, and referral competencies to enable learners to meet the requirements of the Professional Board for Physiotherapy, Biokinetics, and Podiatry.

The qualification contributes to equity and redress in South African society by providing skilled and culturally sensitive sports practitioners who can promote and enhance physical and psychological well-being and health, thus contributing to the general upliftment of our society.

Outcomes

  1. Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions, using critical thinking, have been made.
  2. Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively.
  3. Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information.
  4. Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical, and language skills in the modes of written and oral presentation.

Assessment Criteria

Exit Level Outcome Assessment Criteria:

  1. Gain comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Biokinetics.
  2. Demonstrate and understand the knowledge gained in the applied field of Biokinetics such as Exercise Physiology, Motor Control and Learning, Physical Evaluation Exercise Testing and Prescription.
  3. Apply efficient and effective health promotion, rehabilitation and/or performance enhancement qualifications through the integration and application of the knowledge gained.
  4. Hold appropriate professional ethics relevant to the applied field of Biokinetics.
  5. Collect, analyse and critically evaluate information with regards to Human Movement Science.
  6. Critically review the literature in the field of sport and exercise science and related disciplines.
  7. Acquire the knowledge and skills to function competently as a researcher or sport and exercise scientist.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Assessment Criteria:

    • An adequate level of relevant text comprehension to be demonstrated.
    • Adequate range of relevant sources to have been accessed and relevant problems to have been grasped.
    • Appropriate theoretical and practical assignments and case studies as well as solutions to problems to have been presented.
  • Assessment Standards:

    • Lecturers set assignments, class tests, and final assessment papers based on module outcomes.
    • External moderators ensure assessments follow the standards outlined in the syllabus.
    • Final marking is done to ensure mastery of skills and concepts.
  • Continuous Assessment System:

    • Multiple assessment events throughout the year.
    • Variety of assessment instruments used (tests, essays, practical reports, project reports, oral presentations).
