Purpose and Rationale

Qualification: Bachelor of Arts Honours in Translation Studies

Purpose:

The competencies captured in this qualification will allow the learner to pursue careers as expert translators or interpreters. The core competencies captured in this qualification will provide the learner with a specialised understanding and practical knowledge of editing, and either translation or interpretation. Further, learners will be able to select learning areas related to computer-assisted translation, Bible translation, intercultural communication, lexicography, or literary translation.

After completion of this qualification, the learners that chose translation as a specialization will be able to:

  • Translate from one language into another.
  • Translate various genres of commercial, technical, and creative texts.
  • Evaluate translation products.
  • Annotate own translations.

The learner who chooses interpreting as a specialization will be able to:

  • Interpret from one language to another.
  • Interpret simultaneously.
  • Interpret consecutively.
  • Do sight interpreting.

All learners will complete a research assignment which will focus on research skills. The qualifying learner will be capable of:

  • Conducting independent research using the relevant methodology and techniques in a particular area of translation or interpretation studies.
  • Editing translated/interpreted texts using knowledge of the source and target language.
  • Translating different types of texts from the source into the target language. OR Interpreting different types of texts from the source into a target language.

Rationale:

In a multi-lingual society, translation, interpreting, and editing skills are important to facilitate dialogue and communication across cultural divides. Bachelor of Arts Honours: Translation Studies, NQF Level 8 meets the needs of a multitude of sectors by providing language practitioners who are specialists in translation/interpreting and editing, and who are therefore able to facilitate dialogue and communication across cultural divides.

The broader society will benefit from this qualification in that the qualification introduces opportunities for interdisciplinary research in terms of lexicography, computer-assisted translation, Bible translation, intercultural communication, and literary translations. The typical learner attempting this qualification will have completed a cognate Bachelor's Degree in the Arts at NQF Level 7 with a major in a language. This qualification will allow the learner access to further learning in a Master's Degree in the same or a related field, at NQF Level 9.

Outcomes

  1. Conduct independent research using the relevant methodology and techniques in a particular area of translation or interpretation studies.
  2. Edit translated/interpreted texts using knowledge of the source and target language.
  3. Translate different types of texts from the source into the target language. OR
  4. Interpret different types of texts from the source into the target language. Critical Cross-Field Outcomes: This programme develops all the Critical Cross-Field Outcomes.

Assessment Criteria

Integrated Assessment Criteria:

  1. Texts are translated/interpreted with precision and insight into their content and context: Students will be required to accurately translate and interpret texts, demonstrating a deep understanding of the content and context in which they were written. This will be assessed through written assignments, oral presentations, and class discussions.

  2. Phenomena are identified in a relevant domain: Students must be able to identify and analyze relevant phenomena within their field of study. This will require critical thinking and the application of theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. Assessment will involve case studies, research projects, and practical exercises.

  3. Reasoning is applied objectively and critically: Students will need to demonstrate the ability to apply objective and critical reasoning skills in their assignments and assessments. This includes evaluating evidence, considering different perspectives, and drawing logical conclusions. Assessments will involve essays, debates, and problem-solving tasks.

  4. Thoughts and solutions are developed from clearly conceptualized ideas: Students should be able to develop coherent thoughts and solutions based on well-conceptualized ideas. This will be assessed through the quality of their arguments, the clarity of their writing, and the creativity of their solutions in assignments and exams.

  5. Academic papers and studies are written according to required standards: Students will be expected to write academic papers and studies according to the required standards of their field. This includes proper citation of sources, adherence to formatting guidelines, and the use of appropriate academic language. Assessment will involve the evaluation of written assignments, research papers, and reports.

Integrated Assessment Approach:

  • Formative assessment: Continuous feedback will be provided throughout the learning period to help students improve their understanding and performance. This may include quizzes, peer reviews, and self-assessments.

  • Summative assessment: Final assessments will be conducted to ensure that each learning outcome and/or module has been achieved. This may include exams, presentations, and projects.

  • Integrated assessment across modules: Assessments will be designed to ensure that students achieve the integrated Exit Level Outcomes across multiple modules. This may involve interdisciplinary projects, group assignments, and comprehensive exams that test a wide range of skills and knowledge.

By applying these integrated assessment criteria and approaches, students will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of their field of study, critical thinking skills, and the ability to apply their knowledge in a variety of contexts.
