Purpose and Rationale

Programme Goal

The goal of this programme is to provide graduates with a specialised knowledge in a particular science discipline through in-depth study. The programme aims to equip students with knowledge of research methodology, problem-solving skills, and the ability to develop theory through independent work and critical thinking. This will be achieved through the use of appropriate theory, methods, and techniques from various areas of mathematics.

Requirements for Completion of Science Discipline Qualification

  1. Module Requirements:

    • Pass the required number of modules in the chosen science discipline through in-depth academic study.
    • Assessment criteria: Accuracy and lucidity in answers to examination questions, and clear evidence of understanding theoretical concepts.
  2. Honours Project Submission:

    • Submit an Honours project deemed satisfactory by internal and external examiners.
    • Assessment criteria: Understanding of basic principles, accuracy of factual material and reasoning, ability to relate course content to the problem, reference to other sources, and clarity of presentation.
  3. Demonstration of Competence:

    • Write logical and coherent essays, assignments, and research reports within deadlines.
    • Contribute to class discussions.
    • Satisfactorily answer examination questions.
    • Undertake an independent research project under staff supervision.
  4. Assessment of Outcome 10:

    • Criteria: General demeanour and etiquette.
    • Expectation: Commitment to studies and awareness of interactions with others.

    • Ongoing reform to include assessment of applied competence for each qualification.
