Purpose and Rationale

The qualification aims to equip learners with advanced knowledge, skills, and practical abilities within a natural science field. This will support their ongoing intellectual development, enhance their employment prospects, and enable them to make valuable contributions to society. By producing a substantial number of graduates in various natural sciences, the program seeks to expand South Africa's leadership pool in innovative and knowledge-driven sectors. This will contribute to the country's economic growth and academic advancement.

Outcomes

  1. Display wide-ranging scholastic and basic research skills in Medical Bio-Science and to perform a wide choice of standard and non-standard procedures often in non-standard combinations across the Medical Bio-Science discipline in variable routine and non-routine contexts.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of Medical Bio-Science with depth, is capable of information processing at the level of analysis, reformatting and evaluation of abstract data and concepts, and is capable of formulation of appropriate responses to resolve both concrete and abstract science problems.
  3. Communicate effectively, in both oral and written modes, with peers and the broader Medical Bio-Science community using the appropriate structure, style and graphic support.
  4. Assume responsibility for managing processes within broad parameters for largely defined activities and assume complete accountability for achieving personal and/or group output.

Assessment Criteria

  1. Research Skills: Wide-ranging scholastic and basic research skills in Medical Bio-Science are displayed through the use of standard and non-standard procedures in varying routine and non-routine contexts within the discipline.

  2. Knowledge Demonstration: Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of Medical Bio-Science by analyzing, reformatting, and evaluating abstract data and concepts. Formulates appropriate responses to solve concrete and abstract science problems.

  3. Communication Skills: Demonstrates effective oral and written communication within the Medical Bio-Science community. Utilizes appropriate structure, style, and graphic support when communicating with peers and others.

  4. Process Management: Manages processes within broad parameters for defined activities, taking complete accountability for achieving personal and/or group output in the Medical Bio-Science field.

Integrated Assessment: The faculty employs a Continuous Assessment System, utilizing various assessment events and instruments (such as tests, essays, practical reports, and project reports) throughout the year to evaluate students' understanding and skills in Medical Bio-Science.
