Purpose and Rationale

Programme: Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree: Quantitative Management

Purpose:

This programme aims to allow candidates who have completed Quantitative Management at third-year level to enroll in the Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree: Quantitative Management at Stellenbosch University. It is designed to equip students with a blend of management and analytical capabilities to enhance their competitiveness in the business world. The goal is to educate managers and analysts who can, with experience, effectively analyze and manage business functions and processes strategically, tactically, and operationally. They should be able to substantiate decisions quantitatively to maximize the firm's value. The programme will also focus on the presentation of solutions through presentations and report writing. It will enhance students' quantitative skills, with a focus on quantitative modeling of business applications, emphasizing modeling methodology and result delivery.

The main objectives of this programme are:

  1. To provide students with knowledge and analytical skills across various specialized aspects of Quantitative Management to facilitate a career in this field.
  2. To develop proficient leaders in Quantitative Management in both primary and secondary economic sectors, equipped with advanced applied knowledge and analytical skills to drive sustainable development and growth within their areas of expertise.
  3. To establish a knowledge foundation for students to pursue Master's studies in Quantitative Management.
  4. To offer practical experience in modeling real-world problems, improve written and verbal communication skills, and encourage the application of different techniques in real-world scenarios.

Rationale:

Currently, students who complete Quantitative Management at the third-year level and wish to pursue postgraduate studies have limited options, with the Honours programme in Logistics Management being the only available choice. The quantitative analysis skills developed at the undergraduate level are not further explored or strengthened in this pathway. The introduction of the Bachelor of Commerce Honours: Quantitative Management programme will enable students to leverage these valuable skills and advance their training in Quantitative Management.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and analytical skills across a wide range of different specialized aspects of Quantitative Management.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to apply advanced applied knowledge and analytical skills to drive sustainable development and growth within a field of application in Quantitative Management in the primary and secondary economic sectors.
  3. Model real world problems utilizing different techniques in real world applications.
  4. Use written and verbal communication in Quantitative Management.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:

  • 1.1 Analyse, organise, and critically evaluate related information.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2:

  • 2.1 Use science and technology of a quantitative nature critically and effectively, while taking the environment and the interests of others into account.
  • 2.2 Apply a series of advanced quantitative techniques, procedures, and experimental approaches in problem-solving.
  • 2.3 Apply knowledge and practical skills in quantitative management.
  • 2.4 Use a range of methodology when solutions to practical problems in disparate fields of industry are developed.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:

  • 3.1 Identify divergent problems and resolve them creatively by applying the appropriate Quantitative Management methodology.
  • 3.2 Apply knowledge and practical skills in quantitative management methodology when practical problems in disparate fields of industry are attempted.

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:

  • 4.1 Read and interpret management-focused literature, especially that of a quantitative nature.
  • 4.2 Communicate effectively by employing graphical, statistical, mathematical, and language skills when making oral and written presentations.
  • 4.3 Work effectively as a member of a team.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Assessment criteria ensure assessment validity, reliability, transparency, justice, attainability, and timeous feedback.
  • Academic honesty is ensured through a formal policy curbing plagiarism.
  • Assessment methods vary among modules.
  • For "Quantitative Modelling," "Introduction to Forecasting," and electives: weekly individual assignments and a written exam are required.
  • "Methods of Quantitative Management" is project-driven: assessment within groups on reports and oral presentations.
  • Research assignment: assessed by supervisor and second internal examiner, with an oral presentation.
