Bachelor of Arts Honours in Sport and Recreation Management

Culture and Arts - Sport

Purpose and Rationale

The Sport and Recreation Management qualification aims to provide learners with interdisciplinary knowledge and practical competence to manage sport and recreation activities for the broader community and top-level sports persons. The courses focus on developing a comprehensive understanding of management disciplines within Economic and Management Sciences, while also exploring relevant human movement studies. This Honours qualification stands out from similar courses at other South African tertiary institutions due to its comprehensive, interdisciplinary nature.

A key aspect of this university qualification is the recognition that certain aspects of recreation are distinct from sport, leading to equal emphasis on managing both. The curriculum addresses the roles and functions of managers in grassroots and elite-level sport, as well as in physical and non-physical forms of recreation.

The introduction of the Sport and Recreation Management qualification at the university fills a gap, as no other tertiary institution currently offers training and development opportunities in this field.

  • Formal end of course assessment (summative): At the conclusion of the course, there will be a formal assessment to evaluate the overall learning outcomes and knowledge gained by the students.

  • Continuing formal assessment (formative and summative): Throughout the course, there will be ongoing formal assessments to provide feedback on students' progress and to assess their understanding of the material. These assessments will also contribute to the final grade.

  • Continuing informal assessment (formative): In addition to formal assessments, there will be informal assessments conducted to gauge students' understanding and progress in a more relaxed setting.

Modules will be evaluated on a continuous assessment basis which will include the completion of practical and theory assignments in both the academic and professional settings. This holistic approach to assessment will ensure that students are thoroughly evaluated on their knowledge, skills, and application of the course material.
