Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Purpose:

The purpose of the qualification is to educate and train learners in the knowledge and skills necessary for effective communication in the workplace, with a focus on human resource management. The qualification is designed to prepare individuals for careers in sales, marketing, personnel management, public relations, front-line positions in companies, tourism, and diplomatic roles.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the processes and functions of human resource management in modern society with a particular understanding of the working environment in South Africa.
  2. Demonstrate efficient English language communication skills related to the world of work.
  3. Demonstrate principles and conventions of intercultural communication in a multilingual and multicultural society.
  4. Understand strategic corporate communications (understanding of the marketing communication interface).
  5. Understand new technologies.

Assessment Criteria

The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the general field of enquiry
  • Reveal a detailed knowledge of specific areas of enquiry in the qualification
  • Analyse components/issues/factors and structures about the various areas of the field of knowledge
  • Learn thorough knowledge of current critical debates
  • Contextualise theories and practices within the social environment and geo-political situation of South Africa
  • Be familiar with information technology and current research methodologies at the appropriate level
  • Work efficiently in groups
  • Communicate findings at an appropriate level, both orally, in writing and with the use of visual/graphic aids.

Integrated assessment:

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved: The institution is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.
