Purpose and Rationale

To produce graduates who understand economics, finance, and business management and can apply their knowledge at farm, agribusiness, and policy levels through specialist knowledge of specific production systems. Agricultural development, marketing, and finance are growing in significance, necessitating graduates with comprehensive training in agriculture, commerce, and social sciences. The qualification prioritizes job flexibility. Prospective careers include roles in commercial banks, the National Department of Agriculture, farming, the agribusiness sector, wildlife and tourism, and consulting.

Outcomes

  1. 6 The student is able to understand agriculture as an interrelated system and that, in a problem-solving context, components do not exist in isolation.

Assessment Criteria

Evidence generated through assessment tasks shows that the learner can:

  • Work on an approved farm for six to eight weeks and write an evaluation report demonstrating critical and creative thinking.
  • Complete tests, examinations, practicals, and tutorials.
  • Undertake a research project in an agricultural economic related field.
  • Participate in seminars (Agricultural Economics 490 and 790, and Agribusiness 490 modules) where outcomes 3, 4, and 5 of section 9.2 are assessed.
  • Present seminars in front of peers.
  • Demonstrate critical evaluation of information.
  • View the agricultural industry as an interrelated system (Outcome 6).
  • Show applied competence for each qualification.
  • Integrate learning outcomes through a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving abilities in a real-world situation through a project.
  • Review literature covering theory and applications of techniques and interpretation of findings in seminars.

This comprehensive assessment approach ensures that students have met the required assessment criteria by the end of their fourth year at the University of Natal.
