University of KwaZulu-Natal

Bachelor of Science Honours in Hydrology

Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences - Life Sciences

Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to produce learners who understand the physical and environmental fundamentals of hydrological processes and their interrelations. The aim is for learners to be able to apply hydrological models in sustainable integrated water resources management and planning, considering varying environmental conditions.

By the end of this qualification, learners should have a comprehensive understanding of hydrological processes and how they interact with the environment. They should be equipped with the skills necessary to utilize hydrological models effectively in the management and planning of water resources in a sustainable manner. This qualification aims to prepare individuals to address the challenges posed by changing environmental conditions and to make informed decisions regarding water resource management.

Outcomes

  1. Understand the interrelationships of the hydrological system.
  2. Appreciate computer-based simulation models as tools for hydrological decision making.
  3. Apply hydrological principles and tools in problem-solving.
  4. In-depth understanding of the interrelationships of the hydrological system### develop and implement management strategies for objective problem-solving in hydrology###Practical experience with hydrological models and thus.
  5. Gather, analyse, interpret and synthesise appropriate information from catchment systems.
  6. Communicate the above both orally and in the written form.
  7. Work cooperatively in a team in a problem-solving context.

Assessment Criteria

The institution is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification. Excursion reports, dam design projects, seminars, and applied practical modeling work, all of which are indicators of the learners' ability to integrate knowledge gained throughout the qualification, are utilized for assessment.

Integrated Assessment Methods:

  1. Excursion reports
  2. Dam design projects
  3. Seminars
  4. Applied practical modeling work

These methods demonstrate the learners' ability to integrate knowledge gained during the undergraduate qualification. Learners are assessed through integrated modeling projects, successful completion of literature reviews, and research projects which showcase their ability to apply the knowledge acquired.

Assessment Criteria:

  • Theory and practical tests
  • Course work
  • Fieldwork
  • Group and individual projects

Examinations are designed to evaluate learners' understanding of hydrological theory and their application of this theory to hydrological problem-solving. All formal examinations at levels 300 and 700 are internally and externally evaluated to ensure the effectiveness of the assessment process and the achievement of the qualification's purpose.
