Requirements for Chemistry Qualification

  • Pass the required number of modules of in-depth academic study in chemistry.

    • Assessment criteria: accuracy and lucidity in answers to examination questions, clear evidence of understanding theoretical concepts.
  • Submit an Honours project assessed as satisfactory by internal and external examiners.

    • Assessment criteria: understanding of basic principles, accuracy of factual material and reasoning, ability to relate course material to the problem, reference to other sources, clarity of presentation.
  • Demonstrate competence in outcomes 1-9 by:

    • Writing logical and coherent essays, assignments, and research reports.
    • Contributing to class discussions.
    • Satisfactorily answering examination questions.
    • Undertaking an independent research project under staff supervision.
  • Assessment of outcome 10 based on general demeanour and etiquette, showing commitment to studies and awareness of interactions with others.

Integrated Assessment

  • University of Natal is reforming assessment strategies to include assessment of applied competence for each qualification.
  • For now, a mix of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations assess integration of learning outcomes for each module.
