Purpose and Rationale

The qualification aims to develop learners who have a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts in the field of Biochemistry. It also seeks to cultivate strong communication skills, both written and oral, as well as proficient time management and technical abilities that are essential for various professional settings based on thorough market research.

Furthermore, the program is designed to equip post-learners with the necessary insights and research capabilities at the Honours Exit Level. This will enable them to engage in advanced research projects to address the specific requirements of South Africa in Science, Education, and Technology (SET) sectors.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate deeper understanding and thinking on topical areas of Biochemistry.
  2. Critically evaluate scientific publications and identify areas that need further research and use appropriate methodology to accomplish this (Ref. SAQA CO4).
  3. Work independently and within a team to solve problems or complete tasks within negotiated time-frames (Ref. SAQA CO 2 and 3).

    • Appropriately communicate gathered and interpreted data.

  3. Research Ethics:

    • Adhere to ethical standards in conducting research.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Assessment Strategies:

    • Incorporate continuous assessment and traditional written examinations.
    • Assess the integration of learning outcomes in each module of the qualification.

  • Capstone Assessment:

    • Conduct a 6-month research project as a comprehensive assessment.
    • Includes research proposal, literature review, laboratory work, data processing, and findings communication.
    • Reflects the learner's background and interests, integrating Biochemistry knowledge for problem-solving.
