Culture and Arts - Performing Arts
The purpose of a qualification in Drama Studies is to equip learners with a broad understanding of the nature and function of theatre and drama in relation to society and with specific and detailed knowledge of selected areas of historical and contemporary theatrical and dramatic practice. Practical and creative competence, investigative and critical analysis, as well as effective communication are all stressed. A particular focus is on the use of drama for education and development, and the qualification is designed to enable learners to create work both in community development and education and in the professional theatre.
The qualification also aims to engender the development of community arts. Apart from its vocational purpose, this qualification encourages learners to think of themselves as social beings who need to be able to analyze critically the cultural artifacts which surround them and which mediate their understanding of themselves and their society.
The institution is in the process of reforming its assessment strategies to incorporate the evaluation of applied competence for each qualification. Currently, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations is utilized to assess the integration of learning outcomes within each module of a qualification.
Assessment methods for modules within the qualification include both formative approaches (class work, tests, essays, other written assignments, and practical exercises where applicable) and summative approaches (written, oral, and practical examinations). Additionally, some modules may include assessments such as journals, oral presentations, and portfolios of work to provide a comprehensive evaluation.
The final assessment will be conducted in two ways:
Overall Tabulation: The results obtained throughout the qualification will be compiled to demonstrate that learners have successfully attained the required outcome competencies of the qualification.
Portfolio Assessment: During the final two semesters of study, learners will compile a defined portfolio which will be presented at the conclusion of their studies. This portfolio is designed to evaluate learners' competence across various tasks relevant to the qualification. It will involve further exploration of qualification-related issues and critical reflection on their learning experiences.
