Purpose and Rationale

Afrikaans en Nederlands is 'n akademiese en wyd toepaslike dissipline wat daarop gemik is om aanleerders toe te rus met 'n begrip van die struktuur en funksie van literatuur, taal en kultuur in die samelewing. Aanleerders sal voorsien word met 'n begrip van die visie en beperkings van Afrikaans en Nederlands as 'n dissipline. Aanleerders sal ook toegerus word met die vaardighede om analise en navorsing oor Afrikaanse en Nederlandse literatuur, taal en kultuur te kan doen. Sulke opvoeding is noodsaaklik in Suid-Afrika gegewe die meertalige en multikulturele aard van ons samelewing, en vir interkulturele kommunikasie. Aanleerders met kwalifikasies in die program sal kan werk in uitgewersmaatskappye, die media, argiewe, opvoeding, die staatsdiens (bv. kommunikasie en taalbeplanning) en as taalvertalers (bv. vertaling, redigering).

Outcomes

  1. Manage the self-directed study.
  2. Summarise and evaluate a limited body of information.
  3. Engage at an intermediate level with the concepts, philosophies and concerns of Afrikaans and Nederlands.
  4. Work both individually and as a member of a group.
  5. Demonstrate familiarity with information technology, and the ability to make use of the Internet in conducting research.
  6. Understand the structure of language and literature and the social functions of literature, language and culture in a multilingual and multicultural society.
  7. Transfer the skills, knowledge and values obtained in the programme to bodies and institutions in both the public and private sector (e.g. schools, publishing houses, the media).
  8. Conduct some primary research.
  9. Contemplate and debate ideas about language, literature and culture relevant to the alleviation of social problems.

Assessment Criteria

The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the general field of inquiry.
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of specific areas of inquiry in the programme.
  • Understand the interrelationships amongst various areas of the field of knowledge.
  • Analyse components/issues/factors/structures etc.
  • Grasp the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of the study.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current critical debates.
  • Summarise, compare and evaluate a substantial body of knowledge.
  • Construct a sustained argument, formulate questions and work towards solutions.
  • Command the conceptual discourse of the field of study.
  • Solve problems, both theoretical and applied.
  • Demonstrate an appropriate understanding of the discipline.
  • Contextualise this study within the social environment and the historical understanding.
  • Develop a clear understanding of the historical and contemporary state and possible future of the disciplinary areas in which he/she is working.
  • Command academic Afrikaans at an appropriate level.

Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

The institution is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.
