Purpose and Rationale

  1. The primary goal of this degree program is to cultivate high-caliber graduates rooted in the liberal arts tradition. These graduates will possess the ability to effectively utilize both foundational and advanced knowledge to address challenges within their chosen fields.

  2. Additionally, the degree aims to prepare graduates for diverse career opportunities, tailored to the specialized areas they have concentrated on during their studies. Graduates will be well-prepared to excel in a variety of professions, leveraging their multidisciplinary education to thrive in their chosen career paths.

  5. Analyse studied material or situations critically, imaginatively and independently. In order to meet this outcome, learners will: acknowledge the moral, socio-cultural, political and economic dimensions of that material /those situations### read sympathetically (i.e. taking care to understand the author 's perspective) as well as critically### listen carefully to a variety of 'voices' in text and in situations### appreciate multi-cultural values### make a reasoned judgement /construct an argument on the basis of this analysis.
  6. Communicate effectively. In order to meet this outcome, learners will: use oral and written forms of language appropriately and effectively### present material /construct arguments in an organised and articulate manner### use appropriate technology to facilitate communication### demonstrate sensitivity to the multi-cultural and multi-lingual nature of South African society.

Assessment Criteria

After the First Year:

  1. Knowledge and Understanding:

    • Learners should demonstrate an understanding, both theoretically and practically, of the basic principles, theories, and facts central to the core subjects of the social science curriculum.
    • Learners will have a broad knowledge base with some areas of substantial depth.
  2. Information Access:

    • Learners should be able to utilize available resources to access information.
  3. Information Interpretation:

    • Learners should be able to interpret and summarize information from various sources in a logically structured and well-written essay.

After the Second Year:

  1. Knowledge and Understanding:

    • Learners should demonstrate an understanding, both theoretically and practically, of the principles, theories, and facts within one or two major sub-disciplines of social science.
  2. Independent Study:

    • Learners should be able to utilize all available library and information resources for independent study.
  3. Information Analysis:

    • Learners should be able to analyze and evaluate a wide range of information and present the results in a logically structured and well-written essay.

After the Third Year:

  1. Knowledge and Understanding:

    • Learners should demonstrate a detailed understanding, both theoretically and practically, of the principles, theories, and facts within one or two major sub-disciplines of social science.
  2. Research and Problem-Solving:

    • Learners are required to demonstrate basic research, creative problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, both individually and in groups.
  3. Communicative Skills:

    • Learners should have well-developed communicative skills and be able to structure logical arguments in written and spoken forms.

Integrated Assessment:

  1. Assessment Procedures:

    • Assessment procedures will adhere to Rhodes University Assessment Policy.
  2. Assessment Elements:

    • Assessment will include continual formal assessment (both formative and summative), continual informal assessment (formative), and formal end-of-course assessment (summative).
  3. Coursework:

    • Coursework for continuous assessment may include individual and group work, such as tests, essays, practical reports, and seminars.
