Purpose and Rationale

The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide learners with the following:

  1. A qualification that can be registered with the Professional Board of Occupational Therapy (HPCSA).
  2. Sound scientific knowledge and competence to practice occupational therapy in a wide variety of public and private welfare, educational, and industrial settings, particularly at all levels of health care.
  3. A responsible attitude towards meeting the challenging and changing health needs of the country, and a commitment towards improving the quality of occupational therapy services.
  4. Integrated therapeutic, organizational, and management competencies to plan, resource, and manage occupational therapy services for individuals, groups, and communities.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of natural, social, clinical and occupational sciences
  2. Plan & implement health promotion programmes for optimal occupational performance.
  3. Apply scientific occupational therapy skills and technologies in the delivery of comprehensive occupational therapy to the patient, family and community. 5 Function within a multi-disciplinary health related team. 6 Demonstrate a holistic approach to client/patient care. 7 Conduct and utilise research to plan, implement and evaluate concepts and strategies to ensure quality practice. 8 Behave in a professional, responsible, ethical manner.     • Demonstrates correct selection of screening and assessment tools and techniques appropriate for the client/patient's needs.
  2. Recording Information:

    • Records assessment information accurately and effectively to ensure comprehensive understanding of the client/patient's situation.
  3. Interpretation and Diagnosis:

    • Interprets all assessment information accurately to make a thorough occupational performance diagnosis.
  4. Intervention Plan:

    • Develops and implements a specific occupational therapy intervention plan that outlines specific skills to address the client/patient's needs.
  5. Evaluation of Interventions:

    • Systematically and regularly evaluates the client/patient responses to interventions to track progress and make necessary adjustments.
  6. Intervention Execution:

    • Plans and executes interventions efficiently, ensuring effective outcomes for the client/patient.
  7. Documentation:

    • Documents procedures and results accurately, including evaluation of the intervention process to maintain a clear record of the client/patient's progress.
  8. Professionalism:

    • Demonstrates professional conduct in all aspects of assessment, intervention, and communication with clients/patients.

Integrated Assessment Methods:

  • Written, oral, and clinical examinations to assess theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
  • Assignments and reports to evaluate the application of knowledge in real-world scenarios.
  • Case presentations to communicate learning and experiences gained from fieldwork.
