Purpose and Rationale

Programme Purpose

Assessment Criteria

Bachelor in Occupational Therapy Assessments

The assessments used for the Bachelor in Occupational Therapy ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved through:

  1. A variety of formative and summative assessments, including tests, assignments, oral and written presentations, examinations, objective structured practical evaluations (OSPE), and fieldwork placements.

  2. Integration of a range of assessment modalities to determine if the specified outcomes are met.

  3. Ensuring that written and oral presentations meet acceptable standards in terms of language use and structural organization.

  4. Meeting the required standard and level of achievements for NQF level 7.

Criteria for Demonstrating Competence

  1. Communication: Students must demonstrate competence in communicating logically and coherently in both written and verbal presentations.

  2. Correct Information: Assessment criteria focus on the accuracy and applicability of information and concepts in occupational therapy practice.

  3. Application of Knowledge: Competence is shown by applying theoretical knowledge in direct occupational therapy services at all care levels in a holistic manner.

  4. Professional Standards: Criteria assess the ability to perform indirect occupational therapy services at an acceptable standard.

  5. Problem-Solving: Competence is demonstrated by generating solutions through procedural, narrative, and interactive clinical reasoning strategies.

  6. Ethical Behavior: Assessment includes the ability to conduct professional behavior within the ethical code of the profession and taking responsibility for practice.

  7. Engagement and Participation: Evaluation includes enthusiasm, active participation in discussions, and sharing knowledge acquired in various settings.

Integrated Assessment

  1. Research Project: Assesses the student's use of literature, application of research principles, and reporting of findings in a project.

  2. Comprehensive Case Study: Evaluates the application of occupational therapy process, clinical reasoning, communication, resource utilization, practical skills, and critical evaluation of treatment in a case study.

  3. Final Theoretical Knowledge Assessment: Includes oral and written examinations to evaluate the student's understanding of theoretical concepts.

  4. Peer Evaluations: Demonstrate the student's ability to assess the value of occupational therapy treatment.
