Purpose and Rationale

Qualification:

Industrial Psychology Honours Degree

Purpose:

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with applied competence in the mastering, analysis, interpretation, and understanding of industrial psychological principles and methods. It will further develop the intellectual and professional skills of the learner and prepare the learner for further studies.

Rationale:

This qualification will prepare learners to reflect on their own psychological and human resource management applications to assess their effects in the holistic context of industrial psychology within their everyday lives. It will also prepare them for further study in Industrial psychology. An Industrial Psychology Honours graduate may register at the Professional Board for Psychology of the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a counsellor after completing the qualification with both Industrial Psychology and Psychology as majors, completing an internship in a recognized focus area, and passing a Board examination.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate their competence at applying the advanced theoretical principles of problem identification and solving in the field of industrial psychology /human resource management correctly and reflect on the application made.
  2. Plan and execute advanced research in the field of industrial psychology /human resource management, including the gathering, analysing, synthesising and interpretation of information on industrial psychology /human resource management issues correctly by utilising the relevant theoretical research principles and reflect on the research undertaken.
  3. Communicate effectively orally and in writing with the different role players in the field of industrial psychology /human resource management by applying the theoretical principles of communication and reflect on the application made.
  4. Accountably develop an advanced theoretical and practical macro-vision, taking into account socio-political and multi-cultural factors of economic, business and people management internationally, nationally, provincially/regionally and locally.
  5. Effectively and responsibly organise coordinate basic resources and opportunities in the field of industrial psychology /human resource management by applying the relevant theoretical principles and reflect on the application thereof.
  6. Accept the responsibility for their own activities in the field of industrial psychology/ human resource management.
  7. Practise acceptable social sensitivity in the relationships with others and work effectively in a team by implementing the relevant theory and reflect on the implementation thereof.
  8. Utilise appropriate management technology (e.g. computer and e-mail) effectively in the industrial psychology /human resource management environment.
  9. Explore different effective learning strategies to acquire different skills within the field of industrial psychology /human resource management. strategies.
  10. Promote responsible citizenship through their approach towards the holistic application of management capabilities within the field of industrial psychology /human resource management both on the local and national level.
  11. Practise acceptable social, cultural and aesthetic sensitivity towards the different role players in the industrial psychology / human resource management industry by applying the appropriate theoretical principles and reflect on the application made.
  12. Acquire acceptable employment seeking skills for entry into the different sectors of the economic, business and people management industry utilising the theoretical principles and reflect on the application thereof.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Criteria for Industrial Psychology/Human Resource Management:

  1. Identifying and solving problems: Apply advanced theoretical principles to solve problems in the field of industrial psychology/HR management and reflect on the application made.
  2. Planning and executing research: Gather, analyze, synthesize, and interpret information on industrial psychology/HR management issues using relevant theoretical research principles and reflect on the research undertaken.
  3. Effective communication: Communicate effectively orally and in writing with different role players in the field by applying theoretical principles of communication and reflecting on the application made.
  4. Organizing and coordinating resources: Apply relevant theoretical principles to organize and coordinate resources and opportunities in the field and reflect on the application.
  5. Taking responsibility: Accept responsibility for their own activities in the field of industrial psychology/HR management.
  6. Social sensitivity and teamwork: Practice acceptable social sensitivity in relationships with others and work effectively in a team by implementing relevant theory and reflecting on the implementation.
  7. Utilizing management technology: Effectively use appropriate management technology in the industrial psychology/HR management environment.

  11. Employment seeking skills: Demonstrate acceptable employment seeking skills for entry into different sectors of the industry by applying theoretical principles and reflecting on the application.

Formative Assessment:

  • Continuous assessment through assignments, essays, tests, and modular tests.
  • Minimum mark of 40% per module required for entry into summative assessment.
  • Psychometric testing and case reports done independently.
  • Practical work in Industrial Psychology done in groups.
  • Self-assessment through completing assignments and answering questions based on model answers.

Summative Assessment:

  • Integrated assessment through written 3-hour examinations in each module.
  • Final mark calculated based on the average of test and exam marks in each module.

By adhering to these assessment criteria, learners will be able to demonstrate their proficiency in the field of industrial psychology/HR management and apply theoretical principles effectively.
