Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Purpose:

Practical Competence:

  • Translation Skills: Learners will be able to demonstrate proficiency in translating Latin texts.
  • Research Skills: Ability to conduct research related to Latin language, culture, and literature.
  • Cognitive Skills: Demonstrating critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Designing and Evaluating Curricula: Ability to create and assess educational materials with a focus on Latin studies.

Foundational Competence:

  • Analysis and Interpretation: Understanding and interpreting complex texts and literary works in Latin.
  • Language Formulation and Communication: Proficiency in expressing ideas clearly and effectively in Latin.
  • Analysis of Texts: Ability to analyze and evaluate various types of Latin texts.

Reflexive Competence:

  • Innovative and Creative Thinking: Encouraging learners to think outside the box and come up with original ideas.
  • Reflective Thinking: Developing the ability to reflect on and analyze their own learning and experiences in the field of Latin language, culture, and literature.

Outcomes

  1. Reflect on texts and on the process of problem solving and identification in the field of Latin Studies with full understanding and knowledge of their chosen approach.
  2. Solve text critical problems, also in the form of research articles, based on relevant knowledge of theories.
  3. Work together with other postgraduate learners and lectures in Latin in order to promote research seminars.
  4. Do basic and medium research work based on knowledge of research methodology, including the fields of Latin linguistics, philology and culture. Reflect on the success of their own research and the research of others.
  5. Read Latin on an advanced level and to communicate their knowledge and science (using visual and technical methods where necessary)
  6. Demonstrate sound knowledge of specialised literature and have the skills to find and use such literature.
  7. Demonstrate sound sensitivity in the fields of Latin aesthetics.
  8. Learners' knowledge of Roman democracy (and its evolution) should be able to strengthen their responsibilities as citizens, allowing them to reflect on democratic values.
  9. Display their knowledge in the field of Latin language effectively and appropriately.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Criteria:

  1. Handling Text Critical Problems: The student will be assessed on their ability to analyze, translate, and discuss complex texts effectively.

  2. Problem-Solving and Communication Skills: Evaluation will be based on the student's proficiency in solving problems and communicating research results and theoretical knowledge clearly, both in written and oral formats.

  3. Teamwork Skills: The student's participation in seminars and ability to work effectively in a team setting will be assessed.

  4. Research Article Writing: The student will be evaluated on their ability to write research articles in a structured and appropriate manner.

  5. Translation and Communication Technique: Assessment will focus on the student's proficiency in translation and effective communication techniques.

  6. Knowledge of Specialized Literature: The student will be assessed on their detailed knowledge of specialized literature in the field of Latin studies.

  7. Aesthetic Sensitivity: Evaluation will be based on the student's demonstration of sound aesthetic sensitivity within the field of Latin studies.

  8. Citizenship Skills: The student's knowledge and experience in becoming a better citizen will be assessed.

  9. Language Skills in Ancient Latin: Assessment will focus on the student's proficiency in ancient Latin language skills.

Assessment Methods:

  • Formative Assessment: Essays, seminars, translation exercises, and presentations will be used to provide ongoing feedback and support skill development.

  • Summative Assessment: The student will be assessed through four written examinations (3 hours each) and a research essay. Examinations will be scheduled during the University's examination sessions (June, November, January).

By employing a variety of assessment methods, the student's progress and achievement of the exit-level outcomes will be effectively measured, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of their skills and knowledge in the field of Latin studies.
