Communication Studies and Language - Language

Purpose and Rationale

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with the ability to:

  • Acquire, assess, analyze, and interpret German linguistic and literacy information and principles.
  • Communicate and function effectively in a German-speaking environment.
  • Communicate scientific findings in German, both orally and in writing, at a level suitable for German as a foreign language.
  • Translate from German into English/Afrikaans (only German-speaking learners would translate into German).
  • Apply knowledge of linguistic and literacy principles independently and responsibly in new contexts.
  • Reflect on and apply acquired principles.
  • Demonstrate cultural awareness by linking studies to other languages and cultures.
  • Analyze literary works and evaluate them within their literary and cultural context.

Outcomes

  1. Identify and solve problems relating to German life, literature and language, using the German language at an appropriate level, as well as demonstrate the ability to reflect on German history and society as it is manifested in German literature through the ages.
  2. Work independently, taking responsibility for their own development and completing tasks satisfactorily and in good time.
  3. Collect, analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific information of a linguistic or literary nature, applying it to the literary works that they study.
  4. Communicate in German at a high level, being able to present scientific findings in German, both orally and in writing.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to link their studies in German to other languages and cultures.
  6. Develop learning strategies appropriate for language acquisition as well as literary criticism.
  7. Demonstrate an awareness of cultural differences between South Africa and German speaking countries by analysing literary works and evaluating them in their cultural, historical and literary contexts.
  8. Demonstrate their ability to communicate in German at an acceptable level so that they may represent South Africa in German speaking contexts.

Associated Assessment Criteria:

  1. Problem Solving and Reflective Competence: Demonstrated by answering questions related to the field of study, both orally and in writing.
  2. Assignment Completion: Completing assignments satisfactorily and on time, and attending lectures prepared.
  3. Information Handling: Collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating scientific information for papers on literary and/or linguistic topics.
  4. German Communication: Communicating in German at an appropriate level, presenting scientific findings in German orally and in writing.
  5. Interdisciplinary Linkages: Demonstrating the ability to connect German studies to other languages and cultures.
  6. Language Acquisition Skills: Exhibiting language acquisition skills by effectively communicating in the target language and improving language abilities.
  7. Cultural Sensitivity: Communicating effectively across cultural barriers and showing cultural sensitivity in dealing with German-speaking countries' art and culture.
  8. Interaction with German Speakers: Informal assessment through interaction with German-speaking individuals at conferences and other events.

Integrated Assessment:

Formative Assessment Practices:

  • Presenting one seminar paper for three out of four modules.
  • Informal discussions with the lecturer during the research progress for the research essay.

Summative Assessment Practices:

  • One three-hour paper per module at the end of the year.
  • Submission of a written research paper on an author/genre of choice at the end of the year.
