Purpose and Rationale

Programme Purpose:

The purpose of the programme is to give students a broad foundation in the basic disciplines of Economics and Mathematical Statistics. This exposure equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue advanced graduate studies in Economics, Statistics, or a related field. Students are trained to understand the functioning of the economy, analyze market dynamics, and apply statistical inference to economic relationships. The programme aims to prepare students for careers in both the public and private sectors by providing them with specialized statistical knowledge relevant to economics.

Qualification Purpose:

  1. To provide candidates in various sectors with advanced core knowledge and research skills in Economics, fostering sustainable growth and prosperity across the economy and society.
  2. To develop competent leaders equipped with technical knowledge to steer sustainable development and prosperity.
  3. To offer a strong academic foundation for students interested in pursuing specialized studies in Economics, leading to careers in management and commerce in both the private and public sectors, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.

Outcomes

  1. An understanding of the working of a modern market economy, especially the interactions between market behaviour, policy interventions and economic outcomes.
  2. An understanding of the economic constraints faced by economic policy makers in their policy choices.
  3. An understanding of and the ability to use statistical research to analyse economic and social phenomena.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

  1. Evaluation Supporting Qualification Goals:
    • Students must show their ability to think critically about economic issues and statistical research by analysing arguments and identifying erroneous thinking.
    • Interpret the relevant data, especially empirical data.
    • Apply statistical research skills to economic and social behaviour and phenomena.
    • Identify and analyse statistically economic phenomena and trends.
    • Analyse and evaluate economic policy and its economic and social impact.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Evaluation will take place by means of assignments, tests, and examinations, mostly in written but sometimes also in oral format.
  • Continuous evaluation will include essays, oral presentations, tests, and practical work.
  • The research report will consist of the application of statistical research on an economic topic.
  • The student must:
    • Achieve a minimum of 50% in all modules, with the proviso that he/she may achieve a minimum of 45% for a maximum of 2 modules in elective courses.
    • Complete all compulsory assignments satisfactorily.
    • Demonstrate successful integration of theoretical and practical aspects of Economics and Mathematical Statistics in assignments and the research report.
