Law, Military Science and Security - Justice in Society
The purpose of the qualification is to equip learners with the knowledge and specific skills needed to apply acquired knowledge and skills in various branches of the legal profession. It aims to facilitate personal intellectual development, enhance economic activities, and promote community service. Additionally, the qualification is designed to develop lawyers who have a deep understanding of legal scholarship foundations and principles, enabling them to work independently with the Law in practical situations.
The rationale behind this qualification is to produce a sufficient number of qualified legal professionals who can contribute to both the private and public sectors in South Africa. By doing so, the qualification will ensure the sustainable provision of diverse legal needs such as legal services, leadership, and knowledge-based activities in a transforming South African legal landscape. Furthermore, it will prepare individuals to pursue further studies and research at the postgraduate level, leading to a postgraduate qualification in Law.
The following Associated Assessment Criteria will integrate the Exit Level Outcomes in an integrated manner:
Systematic Knowledge and Understanding: Students must demonstrate a systematic and integrated knowledge and understanding of fundamental terms, concepts, facts, principles, rules, and theories in the discipline.
Analyse, Evaluate and Apply: Ability to analyse, evaluate, and apply the knowledge gained in order to solve problems within the discipline.
Scientific Inquiry: Apply appropriate discipline-related methods of scientific inquiry, independently validate, evaluate, and manage sources of information.
Critical Reflection: Demonstrate a critical reflection on methods or practices to resolve complex discipline-related problems and introduce change within related practice.
Professional and Ethical Behaviour: Behave professionally and ethically within an academic and discipline-related environment, with sensitivity towards societal and cultural considerations.
Effective Communication: Effectively communicate scientific understanding and own opinions/ideas in written or oral arguments, using appropriate discipline-related and academic discourse as well as technology.
Teamwork: Demonstrate effective functioning as a member and leader of a team or group in scientific projects.
Self-Directed Learning: Investigate, with self-directed management of learning activities and responsibility for own learning progress.
