Purpose of the Qualification

The primary objectives of the BA Hons qualification are as follows:

  1. Independent Exploration: Develop students' ability to identify, analyze, and explore new theoretical and empirical information within their chosen field of study in the humanities (including the social sciences) independently.

  2. Specialized Problem-Solving Skills: Equip students with the specialized skills necessary for problem-solving within their discipline, enabling them to apply these skills with progressively less guidance.

  3. Effective Communication: Provide students with the ability to articulate and defend a position, both verbally and in writing, from a theoretical standpoint supported by relevant literature, demonstrating a coherent understanding of the discipline's discourse.

  4. Advancement to Research Level: Guide students through the transition from basic to advanced research levels, ensuring they have mastery over essential theoretical and methodological material.

  5. Analytical and Methodological Competence: Develop students' analytical skills and methodological competence, enabling them to address societal issues critically and independently evaluate complex problems.

Outcomes

  1. Use and apply with progressively less guidance the highly specialised skills needed for particular problem-solving in a discipline in the humanities.
  2. Demonstrate specialised knowledge, that is knowledge focused in greater depth and fuller range on the content of one major discipline in the humanities, with adequate control of its essential theories and methodologies.
  3. Display an advanced grasp of the typical concepts and problems in the field of study.

Assessment Criteria

Qualifying Learner in the Humanities

  • Identify, Analyse, and Explore: The qualifying learner will have the ability to identify, analyse, and explore new theoretical and empirical information within their field of study in the humanities. They will do so with a degree of independence, either in preparation for further research or for practical application in society.

  • Recognise and Define New Areas of Study: They will be able to recognise and define promising new areas of study, integrating them into the relevant theoretical frameworks within the discipline.

  • Deal with Complexity: The learner will be able to recognise complexity within their field of specialisation and select appropriate responses to address it effectively.

  • Independent Critical Assessment: They will engage in independent critical assessment of problems, identifying and applying the relevant theories necessary to tackle their complexity.

  • Scholarly Interaction: With a solid grounding in their discipline, the learner will engage in scholarly interaction, recognising key issues and taking a theoretically informed stance in debates.

  • Theoretical Argumentation: They will be able to argue a position from a theoretical standpoint, incorporating relevant literature to support their arguments. Their arguments will demonstrate a high level of cogency and coherence, reflecting a deep understanding of the discourse within the discipline.

Integrated Assessment

  • Continuous Assessment: Integrated assessment will be conducted on an ongoing basis, incorporating various formative and summative methods such as portfolios, assignments, workplace assessments, class exercises, as well as written and oral examinations.

By demonstrating proficiency in these areas, the qualifying learner will be well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to their field of study and excel in both academic and professional contexts.
