Qualification Overview

The Tourism Management qualification aims to develop future managers and entrepreneurs in the tourism industry with the following objectives:

The qualification in Tourism Management focuses on the following key areas:

    • Provides a holistic view of the tourism system and its components.
  3. Operational Tools:

    • Equips learners with tools and techniques to manage tourism enterprises effectively.

    • Offers industry exposure to complement academic learning and enhance competitive advantage in the job market.

Outcomes

  1. Identify and solve problems and make strategic and operational decisions using critical and creative thinking in the field of tourism management.
  2. Work effectively with co-workers as members of a team, group organisation and clients and community stakeholders.
  3. Organise and manage themselves and their activities responsibly and effectively within the norms and standards of the relevant industry.
  4. Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate and utilise relevant information for planning and decision making.
  5. Communicate effectively within an organisation as well as with external stakeholders using relevant visual, symbolic, and/or language skills.
  6. Use relevant technology effectively in operating and managing a tourism business.
  7. Demonstrate a commitment to operate in a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable way.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of the tourism system and the inter-relationship and inter-dependency of its components. The qualification provides theoretical, practical and industry interactive learning opportunities which include: Participate as a responsible citizen in the life of particularly local and regional communities and being culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of contexts. Explore local and global education and career opportunities. Identify and developing entrepreneurial opportunities in the tourism sector.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

  1. Operational and Managerial Functions in Tourism Industry

    • Deal effectively with the operational and managerial functions in key sectors of the tourism industry.
  2. Feasibility Study and Strategic Planning

    • Conduct a feasibility study for a tourism enterprise.
    • Develop a strategic and business plan for a tourism enterprise.
  3. Other Critical Outcomes

    • All other critical outcomes listed in NSB Regulations, 1998: 8 will be addressed in the learning programme.

  • Workplace Assessments
  • Written Examinations
  • Oral Examinations/Evaluations
  • Other: The successful completion of industry recognized practical short courses like Galileo and Fidelio will be required as an integral part of the program.
