Purpose and Rationale

Bachelor of Music

Purpose:

  • The Bachelor of Music offers:
    • Broad and basic undergraduate training in music in the academic and performing fields.
    • Ensuring that South Africa has sufficient skilled individuals for the music needs of the country, including teachers, performing artists, producers, musicologists, and composers.
    • Providing students with opportunities for personal artistic growth and for making a rewarding artistic contribution to the South African and international community.
    • Equipping students with the necessary academic and practical skills to proceed with more specialized and advanced study at the Postgraduate level.

Rationale:

  • The qualification ensures that South Africa has sufficient skilled individuals for the music needs of the country, including teachers, performing artists, producers, musicologists, and composers.
  • The qualification also provides learners with opportunities for personal artistic growth and for making a rewarding artistic contribution to the South African and international community.
  • The learners will develop the necessary academic and practical skills to proceed with more specialized and study at the Postgraduate level.

Outcomes

  6. Show an understanding of the performance of music in accordance with applicable historic, stylistic, and theoretical prerequisites.

Assessment Criteria

The following associated assessment criteria assess the Exit Level Outcomes in an integrated manner:

  1. Exhibit a graduate-level of technical skills and aesthetic insight in performance on at least one instrument

    • Performance on an instrument will be judged by a panel of internal and external adjudicators. The student must demonstrate technical proficiency and a deep understanding of musical aesthetics in their performance.
  2. Present, under supervision, written and adequately edited assignments as primary research projects

    • Assignments must be presented logically and coherently, showcasing the student's ability to conduct primary research. The assignments should be well-edited and demonstrate a high standard of academic writing in either Afrikaans or English.
  3. Exhibit an acceptable standard of academic Afrikaans or English

    • Students must demonstrate proficiency in academic writing in either Afrikaans or English. The language used should be appropriate for a graduate-level academic setting.
  4. Exhibit the necessary pedagogic and communication skills in a teaching situation involving children as well as adult learners

    • Students will be assessed on their ability to effectively teach both children and adult learners. This includes demonstrating pedagogical skills and clear communication.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Public performances: Performance and Orchestra learners will showcase their skills in public performances in their final year. This will assess their ability to integrate practical skills and academic knowledge gained throughout the program.

  • Self-study projects: Students majoring in Musicology or Music Education will undertake specific self-study projects. These projects will assess the integration of acquired knowledge and skills in a more specialized area of study.

By meeting these assessment criteria, students will demonstrate their readiness to graduate and succeed in their chosen field within the music industry.
