Purpose and Rationale

Qualification Purpose

  1. The first purpose of the qualification is to equip qualifiers with graduate-level knowledge of the functioning of the South African economic and financial systems, as well as basic econometric models.

  2. The second purpose is to produce specialized graduates capable of conducting prognosis, analysis, and forecasting of the South African economy.

  3. The third purpose is to provide qualifiers with graduate-level knowledge of applying economic and econometric models in practical settings, to assist management or inform policy decisions within the government.

Outcomes

  1. Explain the workings of the South African economy, the global economy and financial markets. Also to analyse and simulate economic scenarios
  2. Use basic econometric models of regression, basic statistical, and hypothesis, testing simulation equations and forecasting. Critical cross-field outcomes: Identify and solve problems on economic trends and strategic planning by using critical and creative thinking. Working effectively with management and a team, group, organisation and community, implementing economic principles and prescribed economic policy. Collect, analyse, organise, and critically evaluate economic and financial data. Communicate effectively, using visual, statistical, computer and language skills as well as economic scenarios in the modes of oral and/or written persuasion. Organise and manage him/herself and his/her activities responsibly and effectively. Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others.

Assessment Criteria

  1. Knowledge and skills listed under the Diploma level:

    • Understanding of economic principles and theories.
    • Ability to analyze economic data and trends.
    • Knowledge of statistical tools and methods.
    • Proficiency in computer-based modeling and simulations.
    • Skills in conducting economic research and analysis.
    • Understanding of business and economic policies.
    • Ability to communicate economic information effectively.
  2. Employees capable of doing intermediate statistical analysis of economic trends on junior management level:

    • Conducting statistical analysis of economic data.
    • Interpreting economic trends and patterns.
    • Generating reports and presenting findings to management.
    • Making data-driven recommendations.
    • Collaborating with team members to analyze economic issues.
    • Applying statistical methods to forecast economic trends.
    • Utilizing computer-based tools for data analysis.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Simulations: Employees will engage in simulated real-world economic scenarios to demonstrate their ability to analyze and interpret economic trends.
  • Written examinations: Assessing employees' theoretical knowledge of economic principles and statistical analysis.
  • Computer-based model building and simulations: Employees will develop and analyze economic models using computer-based tools to assess their practical skills.

This integrated assessment approach ensures that employees demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of economic analysis and statistical methods at the intermediate level, preparing them for junior management roles.
