The purpose of the qualification is to provide learners with graduate-level knowledge, skills, and applied competence in the field of Financial Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, Management Accounting, and Computer Information Systems. This will offer opportunities for continued intellectual and professional growth, gainful economic activity, and rewarding contributions to society.
Another goal of the qualification is to produce a significant number of General Accountants for both the public and private sectors in South Africa.
Lastly, the qualification serves as an undergraduate specialization that allows students to progress to the B Com (Hons) Acc and CTA, meeting the requirements set by the Public Accountants' and Auditors' Board as well as the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.
