Purpose and Rationale

Purpose of the Qualification

  1. The primary purpose of this qualification is to equip qualifiers with graduate-level (Level 6) knowledge, specific skills, and applied competence in the field of animal science. This will enable them to experience continued personal intellectual growth, make meaningful economic contributions, and provide valuable input to society.

  2. The secondary purpose of this qualification is to supply Southern Africa with animal science professionals. These professionals will possess a comprehensive and continually expanding understanding of the fundamental principles of animal science. They will focus on areas such as functional anatomy, physiology, growth, genetics, breeding, nutrition, and management of both domesticated and wild animals. Additionally, they will be well-versed in the factors that influence the quality of animal products.

Outcomes

  1. Knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of animal science which includes the functional anatomy, physiology, genetics, breeding, nutrition and management of domestic and wild animals.
  2. The skills to efficiently breed, feed and manage all classes of domesticated and wild animals in different production systems.
  3. To comply with professional and ethical standards in the agricultural and wildlife sciences.
  4. To comply with the requirements for professional registration as an animal scientist.
