Purpose and Rationale
This qualification aims to teach learners how to apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired in the prerequisite Bachelor of Science (Geology) qualification to a comprehensive study of geological science. The overall goal is to prepare graduates for registration as professional earth scientists skilled in fields such as mining geology, exploration geology, or groundwater geology.
Key objectives of the Honours qualification include bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in a professional setting. It also aims to provide postgraduate-level knowledge, advanced field and laboratory skills, and a deep understanding of environmental responsibility and professional ethics within the broader field of geological sciences. These competencies will support ongoing personal and professional growth, facilitate entry into research-based learning, enable gainful employment as a recognized geologist (registered with the SA Council for Natural Scientific Professions), and allow for meaningful contributions to society.
Additionally, the qualification seeks to increase the number of qualified professionals in geological sciences in South Africa to sustain and enhance local leadership in the discovery and sustainable utilization of natural resources, with a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship.
Furthermore, the program aims to expand South Africa's reputable knowledge base in geological sciences and extend this expertise to historically disadvantaged communities. This initiative is designed to provide broader access to lifelong learning opportunities and advanced earth science qualifications to these communities.
Lastly, the qualification also intends to equip a group of school teachers with a solid understanding of geological science principles, methods, and advancements at a professional level before pursuing specific post-qualification teaching credentials.
Outcomes
- Factual knowledge of the basic fields of geology, mineralogy, igneous a metamorphic petrology, sedimentology, structural geology, groundwater, environmental and engineering geology, economic geology, geostatistics and most particularly how they relate to each other.
- Factual knowledge of principles and methods inherent in the following advanced fields of geology: applied petrography and geochemistry, fluid-rock interactions and their importance in economic geology, basin analysis, crustal evolution with an emphasis on Precambrian and African crust exploration techniques, basic mining methods.
- Factual knowledge of the basic precepts in business practice and entrepreneurship. Skills:
- Applying the combined basic knowledge inherent above to solving problems in mining geology, exploration geology and groundwater geology.
- Advanced field mapping and exploration skills, using GIS, aerial photographs, satellite imagery and basic geochemical and geophysical techniques.
- Computer literacy and familiarity with appropriate geological software ability to use GIS software. Values:
