Purpose and Rationale

The first purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifiers with graduate-level (Level 6) knowledge, specific skills, and applied competence in the field of animal science. This aims to facilitate continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity, and rewarding contributions to society.

The second purpose of this qualification is to cultivate animal science professionals in southern Africa. These professionals will possess a clear and continuously expanding understanding of the interaction between grazers, browsers, and the environment. This understanding will be founded on a comprehensive knowledge and grasp of the functional anatomy, physiology, growth, genetics, nutrition, and management of both domesticated and wild animals. Additionally, they will be well-versed in the factors that influence the quality of animal products.

Outcomes

  1. Knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of animal science and pasture management, with emphasis on the interaction between grazers and browsers and the environment.
  2. The skills to efficiently breed, feed and manage all classes of domesticated and wild animals on pastures and the confinement and management of grazing and browsing game.
  3. To comply with professional and ethical standards in the agricultural and wildlife sciences.
  4. To comply with the requirements for professional registration as an animal scientist.
