Purpose and Rationale

Students who qualify for the Baccalaureus Consumer Science degree have developed competence in being a professional Home Economist. They have a traditional background and can be employed as a specialist trained in extension, business, or become an entrepreneur in clothing management, food product development in industry, or food service enterprises.

The Home Economist/Consumer Scientist will develop competence in adult education and intervention to train people to fulfill roles in business and industry or to establish small-scale enterprises.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate the abilities to contribute to the organisation and management of the small scale clothing enterprise to ensure a satisfactory end result for the consumer.
  2. Apply adequate numeracy skills to ensure accurate accounting within the enterprise.
  3. Have the awareness for and the ability to communicate the needs of employees and customers for a safe environment and be responsible for and have a positive attitude
  4. toward accident prevention.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to compare, analyse, evaluate and manage situations arising in the different activities in the enterprise.
  6. Focus on the construction of clothing, evaluation of retail clothing, care for textiles and satisfaction in wear.
  7. Anticipate the future and respond to the demands that these new developments and changes in the field of clothing manufacturing have to satisfy the needs of consumers.

Assessment Criteria

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

Continuous and authentic assessment strategies will be utilised in the evaluation of learners. Learners will have multiple opportunities using any three of the following methods of assessment:

  1. Regular tests (written and/or oral examinations)
  2. Practical teaching in the school environment
  3. Laboratory exercises and reports
  4. Portfolios
  5. Written and oral presentations of mini projects or seminars in an individual as well as a group context
  6. Field trip reports
  7. Computer programs outputs and/or demonstrations
  8. Computer-based solutions to information systems (software, web, e-commerce, etc.)

A detailed record and monitoring of learner progress will be maintained.
