Purpose and Rationale

This integrated qualification leads to registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa for occupational therapy and rehabilitation services. Occupational therapists work within multidisciplinary teams to enhance individual and community health. Their goal is to assist those facing challenges in productivity, self-care, and leisure activities due to various factors, to reintegrate into society.

The first degree readies students for general practice and offers pathways to postgraduate diplomas and master's degrees. These programs focus on specialized areas such as employment for individuals with disabilities, hand therapy, neurological rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation, psychosocial rehabilitation, as well as research-oriented degrees like master’s and doctoral degrees.

  • Learners are provided with clear objectives.
  • Learners' knowledge, skills, and attitudes are assessed in real situations such as clinical placements in institutions and communities, as well as simulations like OSPES.
  • Assessment methods include oral and written examinations.
  • Demands on learners increase in complexity as the program progresses.
  • Learners are expected to eventually work independently in various settings.
  • Assessment criteria include the ability to provide effective therapy, take responsibility for occupational therapy for patients/clients, manage a case load, work with team members, supervise support staff, and educate patients/clients and fellow healthcare professionals.
  • Learners receive feedback on their competencies.
  • Integrated assessment methods include portfolios, simulations, workplace assessments, written examinations, oral examinations, written assignments, presentations and group discussions of case studies and seminars, and practical examinations (skills examination).
