Purpose and Rationale

Purpose:

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with applied competence in the analysis, interpretation, and application of Sport Science principles in the fitness and health, coaching, and teaching sectors of the Sport Industry. The Learner should be able to take strategic decisions in the context of Sport Science, and to assess any internal or external decision impacting on Sport Science. The learner should further be able to reflect on his/her scientific decisions and applications to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of Sport Science as practice.

Rationale:

There is a need for qualified professionals in the field of Sport Science in South Africa. This qualification has been designed to address the expressed need and aims to develop professionals and enable them to apply their knowledge and skills in this field.

Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate their ability to apply theoretical principles of problem identification and solving correctly in Sport Science at postgraduate level, and reflect on the applications made (problem-solving skills).
  2. Plan and apply research in Sport Science correctly, including the precise gathering, analyzing, synthesizing and interpreting of information correctly at postgraduate level utilising relevant theoretical research principles and reflecting on research undertaken (research skills).
  3. Communicate effectively in writing and with the different role-players in the field of Sport Science by utilizing different modes of communication and reflecting on the applications made (communication skills).
  4. Develop an accountable theoretical and practical macro-vision of Sport Science locally, provincially/regionally, nationally and internationally (macrovision).
  5. Organize and co-ordinate resources and opportunities in Sport Science effectively and responsibly by applying relevant theoretical aspects (including entrepreneurship where relevant), reflecting on the applications made as well as accept the responsibility for his/her activities in the field of Sport Science (entrepreneurship### self-responsibility skills).
  6. Practice acceptable social sensitivity in their relationship with others and work efficiently in a sport science and multi-disciplinary team by implementing relevant theories reflecting on the implementation thereof (teamship).
  7. Utilize appropriate sport science technology (measurement and testing equipment) efficiently in the sport science environment (technological and environmental literacy).
  8. Explore different effective learning strategies to acquire various capabilities of a sport scientist (explore learning strategies).
  9. Practice responsible citizenship through their approach towards the holistic application of sport science capabilities and professional values in sport (promote citizenship).
  10. Practice acceptable social, cultural and aesthetic sensitivity towards people of different sport communities and the role players in the sport science industry effectively by applying appropriate principles and reflecting on the application made (cultural and aesthetic sensitivity).
  11. Acquire acceptable employment seeking skills that will give them the edge to enter into different sectors of the sport science-industry as specialists (employment seeking skills).

Assessment Criteria

Competency Assessment Criteria:

  1. Identify and solve problems in the field of sport science by applying relevant theoretical principles at a postgraduate level (problem solving skills).
  2. Plan and execute research in the field of sport science, including gathering, analyzing, synthesizing, and interpreting information using relevant theoretical research principles (research skills).
  3. Demonstrate the ability to communicate orally and in writing with role players in the field of sport science (communication skills).
  4. Demonstrate a theoretical and practical macrovision of sport science at local, provincial/regional, international, and national levels (macrovision).
  5. Organize and coordinate resources and opportunities in the field of sport science, accepting responsibility for activities (entrepreneurship/responsibility skills).
  6. Demonstrate the ability to work in a team and practice acceptable social sensitivity in relationships with others (teamship).
  7. Use the required technology (e.g., testing and measurement equipment) in the sport science environment (technological and environmental literacy).

Assessment Practices:

Formative Assessment:

  • Practical and class assignments
  • Essays
  • Presentations
  • Informal class tests
  • Formal module tests in written or oral mode
  • Research leading to scientific assignments
  • Self-assessment and group-assessment

Summative Assessment:

  • Three-hour written or oral examination at the end of each module
  • Integrated assessment focusing on exit-level outcomes
  • Minimum mark of 40% required for formative assessment to gain examination admission
  • Minimum mark of 40% required in the summative assessment
  • Final mark of at least 50% needed to pass a module (50% formative assessment + 50% examination)
  • Learners with a final exam mark of at least 45% may be eligible for a supplementary examination in the relevant module.
