Purpose and Rationale

The primary purpose of the (Hons BMus) qualification is to provide graduates with the knowledge, specific skills, and applied competence in musical scholarship, teaching, and/or performance. This is intended to offer opportunities for personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity, and valuable contributions to society.

Additionally, the qualification aims to produce graduates across various learning fields to expand the musicological leadership base, fostering innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activities in South Africa and other countries.

Another objective is to empower graduates to understand their role as intellectual leaders in society and to equip them to effectively fulfill this role.

Outcomes

  1. The (Hons) BMus graduate can identify, analyse, formulate, and solve musicology problems creatively and responsibly.
  2. The (Hons) BMus graduate can work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organization, community, and contribute to the group output.
  3. The (Hons) BMus graduate can manage and organize her or his activities and life responsibly and effectively, including her or his studies and career.
  4. The (Hons) BMus graduate can collect, analyse, organize and critically evaluate information.
  5. The (Hons) BMus graduate can communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and/ or language skills in the modes of oral and/ or written presentation, in sustained discourse.
  6. The (Hons) BMus graduate can use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health and well-being of others, in community, national and global contexts.
  7. The (Hons) BMus graduate can demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognizing that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation, and by acknowledging their responsibilities to those in the local and broader community. Developmental: In order to contribute to the full personal development of each learners and the social and economic development of the society at large, it must be the intention underlying any programme of learning to make an individual aware of the importance of the following developmental outcomes:
  8. The (Hons) BMus graduate can reflect on and explore a variety of strategies to learn more effectively.
  9. The (Hons) BMus graduate can participate as a responsible citizen in the life of local, national and global communities.
  10. The (Hons) BMus graduate can be culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of social contexts.
  11. The (Hons) BMus graduate can explore education and career opportunities by drawing on the various knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired in the accomplishment of this qualification.
  12. The (Hons) BMus graduate can develop entrepreneurial opportunities by drawing on the various knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired in the accomplishment of this qualification. Specific: A (Hons) BMus student is actively engaged in becoming a well-rounded, educated person and in preparing for further, more specific study or the work environment. As such she or he develops and holds certain values and integrates knowledge and skills to achieve her or his purposes. The specific outcomes show how knowledge, skills and values are integrated in the qualification in the SAQA field of Culture and Arts (02).
  13. The BMus (Hons) graduate can engage in critical thinking and problem solving in studying topics of a complex and specialized nature in the discipline of musicology.
  14. The BMus (Hons) graduate can display systematic knowledge of the scope of the musicological discipline and demonstrate a confident and scientifically founded understanding of its methodological and theoretical foundations.
  15. The BMus (Hons) graduate can conduct research in the field of musicology.
  16. The BMus (Hons) graduate can display professional skills required in the field of musicology.

Assessment Criteria

Critical Cross-Field:

  1. Graduates will:

    • Identify, analyze, and solve musicological problems drawing on personal experience.
    • Analyze concrete and abstract complex musicological problems using theoretical knowledge.
    • Generate alternative strategies for solving significant musicological problems.
    • Critically evaluate viewpoints on music and compare them to their own.
    • Offer evidence to support their original views in various ways.
  2. They will:

    • Demonstrate respect for others' opinions without bias.
    • Show tolerance of diversity through reporting without bias.
    • Use effective communication skills within groups.
    • Lead effectively in appropriate contexts, such as musical performances.
    • Be supportive followers and active group participants.
  3. They will:

    • Demonstrate study skills and research strategies.
    • Use creative learning strategies based on personal contexts.
    • Think independently and in original ways.
    • Organize research plans effectively.
    • Make appropriate arrangements for recitals in the performance option.

Developmental:

  2. They will:

    • Create job opportunities and contribute to society.

Specific:

  1. Graduates will:

    • Identify and analyze significant problems in musicology.
    • Review literature and critically evaluate viewpoints.
    • Present sustained arguments on discipline-related issues.
  2. They will:

    • Collect, organize, and evaluate information relevant to musicology.
    • Apply theories and models to collected data.
    • Use accepted research methods and conventions in presenting arguments.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Formative Assessment: Learning and assessment are integrated, focusing on smaller sections of work.
  • Summative Assessment: Tests the ability to manage a large body of knowledge and achieve outcomes.
