Purpose and Rationale

Programme Overview

The programme is designed to provide the opportunity for further intensive study in taxation, focusing on concepts and research methods. This training is intended to equip candidates with the necessary skills for employment opportunities in both public and private sector organizations that deal with the analysis of taxation and related issues.

Objectives:

  • Equip candidates with in-depth knowledge of taxation principles
  • Provide skills in research methods relevant to taxation studies
  • Prepare students for employment in public or private sector organizations focusing on taxation
  • Enable further study at the Master's level in Taxation or related fields, both locally and internationally

Upon completion of the programme, individuals will be well-prepared for a career in taxation or further academic pursuits in related areas.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment of Critical Cross-field Outcomes:

  • Formative Assessment: The learner's achievement of critical cross-field outcomes is assessed formatively during the course through a range of activities.
  • Summative Assessment: It is assessed in the capstone activity outlined for the course.

Assessment of General Programme Outcome:

  • Formative Assessment: The learner's achievement of general programme outcome is assessed through a range of formative and summative assessments throughout the course, and particularly in the capstone activity outlined.
  • The Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) graduate will be assessed on the following outcomes:
    1. Knowledge Demonstration: Recent findings and discoveries in the discipline, academic issues and controversies, technical competence in problem-solving, ability to read and discuss important articles, conduct literature search, construct academic works catalogue, apply specialist knowledge in real-life situations, and participate in normative discussions.
  • Integrated Assessment: Skills learned in Taxation Honours are assessed through examinations and the 'Honours Technical Report,' involving supervised taxation research targeted at a specific academic journal or discursive treatment. The report will be assessed on reviewing literature, problem-solving techniques, and methodology.
  • Assessment Process:
    • Proposal review, methodology, and objectives outline.
    • Completion of the research project with the supervisor's guidance.
    • Presentation at a student seminar.
    • Final assessment and grading.
  • Masters Programme Continuation: The Technical Report can be used as a basis for a Master's dissertation if the student continues into the Masters programme.
  • BCom (Honours) Degree Requirement: Candidates are required to write a dissertation or mini-thesis demonstrating independent exploration of a research topic's relevance to academic knowledge advancement or practical problem resolution.
