Purpose and Rationale

The main purposes of the qualification are as follows:

  1. Knowledge and Skills Development: To equip qualifiers with graduate-level knowledge, specific skills, and applied competence in fields such as Law, Military Science and Security, Human and Social Studies, and Business, Commerce, and Management Studies. This will enable ongoing personal intellectual growth, facilitate gainful economic activity, and support rewarding contributions to society.

  2. Graduate Output: To produce a significant number of graduates in various political sciences disciplines, thereby expanding the local leadership base engaged in innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activities in South Africa.

  3. Specialized Professionals: To cultivate a cadre of political analysts, foreign officers, policy developers, and public administrators and managers in South Africa. This group will develop a deep and continuously expanding understanding of political sciences methods and progress, even before pursuing specific postgraduate qualifications.

Additionally, the program aims to provide learners with an in-depth understanding of contemporary world politics and related changes. It allows for the development of insight into global politics, enabling learners to engage innovatively and proactively in identifying and solving international problems amidst ongoing globalisation.

Outcomes

  1. The learner will obtain knowledge of content and insight pertaining to the related factual knowledge, concepts and theories.
  2. The learner will acquire skills and proficiencies equipping him/her to: Identify and solve problems related to international political, policy and administrative and management situations co-operate with others in achieving and/or creating specific end product related to international relations organise and manage his or her learning process and applied skills. deal with information, communication, the application of science and technology and develop a holistic world view.
  3. The learner will develop appropriate attitudes, dispositions and/or values concerning various international political, policy and/or administrative and management practices qualifying him/her for a professional career in his/her field of expertise. Critical cross-field outcomes: Critical outcomes for the programme in international relations include but are not limited to various competencies and applied competencies such as: identifying and solving problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made### working effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation, community### organising and managing oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively### collecting, analysing, organising and critically evaluating information### communicating effectively using visual and language skills in the modes of oral and/or written persuasion### using science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others### demonstrating and understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising the problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation### contributing to the full personal development of each learner and the social and economic development of the society at large, by making it the underlying intention of this programme of learning to make an individual aware of the importance of reflecting on and exploring a variety of strategies to learn more effectively### participating as responsible citizens in the life of local, national and global communities### being culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of social contexts### exploring education and career opportunities### and developing entrepreneurial opportunities.

Assessment Criteria

Associated Assessment Criteria:

  • Use of norm-based and criteria-based modalities in assessment.
  • Ensuring reliability through internal and external moderation.
  • Meeting standards and levels of achievement required for qualification pegging at NQF level 6.
  • Utilizing a variety of assessment methods including:
    • Portfolios
    • Simulations
    • Written examinations
    • Oral examinations
    • Other tasks prescribed by assessors.

The modalities for integrated assessment should allow learners to demonstrate applied competence through a range of formative and summative methods tailored to specific guidelines. Assessors should be able to develop appropriate assessment methods for credentialing purposes based on the context and situation of the candidates seeking recognition of their learning achievements.
