Purpose and Rationale

  1. The program aims to provide advanced and specialized knowledge, skills, and applied competence to individuals with graduate-level qualifications. This will enable them to engage in continued personal intellectual growth, pursue gainful economic activities, and make rewarding contributions to society, the economy, enterprises, and communities.

  2. The program seeks to produce graduates with expertise in a variety of social science fields. This will help broaden the local South African leadership base and promote innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activities in the country.

Outcomes

  1. Learning demonstrate the capacity to identify and solve problems in the social science through critical and creative thinking.
  2. Learning demonstrate skills that will enable to effectively work with others in teams, groups, organisations and communities.
  3. Learning to demonstrate the ability to design research and collect, analyse, organise, and critically evaluate information in the social sciences.
  4. Learning to be able to organise themselves and manage their activities responsibly and effectively.
  5. Learners demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively using visual, oral and/or written persuasion.
  6. Learners demonstrate the ability to use technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others.
  7. Learners to demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation.
  8. Learners demonstrate awareness of the underlying intention of the programme which involves full personal development of each learner and the social and economic development of the society at large.
  9. Learners to demonstrate an understanding of social interaction in various settings and workplaces such as the industry, the school, the public sector and society as a whole.
  10. Learners to demonstrate an awareness of various education and career opportunities.

Assessment Criteria

  1. Written assignments should demonstrate theoretical awareness, critical analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  2. Team assignments should be prepared and presented collaboratively.
  3. Assignments must be properly written, showing critical analysis and using technical concepts accurately.
  4. Deadlines for assignment submissions, examinations, and tests must be met promptly.
  5. Written assignments should exemplify effective communication through grammatical accuracy and logical presentation.
  6. Utilize information technology systems responsibly, considering social, political, and economic implications, and environmental and health concerns.
  7. Assignments should reflect an understanding of local, national, and global interconnectedness.
  8. Fieldwork for research projects should consider intellectual, moral, spiritual, social, political, and economic development.
  9. Interact with fellow students respectfully, with care, honesty, tolerance, and understanding of diverse interests.
  10. Encourage participation in career guidance sessions and internships where possible. Integrated assessment methods include group assignments, essays, discussions, tutorial tasks, group research reports, tests, oral and written examinations to ensure qualification objectives are met.
