Purpose and Rationale

Faculty of Agriculture Program in Agricultural Economics, Farm Business Management, and Extension

The agricultural industry plays a significant role in the South African economy by meeting food demands, providing employment, adding value, and fostering linkages with other economic sectors.

Faculty's Objective: The Faculty of Agriculture aims to educate learners for life, equipping them with the necessary skills to tackle the challenges of a dynamic agricultural sector, especially focusing on small-scale agriculture.

Program Offering:

  • Department Involvement: primarily through the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development.
  • Program Focus: Agricultural Economics, Farm Business Management, and Extension.
  • Foundation: Strong foundation in applied agriculture provided by the Department of Livestock and Pasture Science and the Department of Agronomy.

Program Details:

  • Goal: Equipping learners with analytical, reasoning, and communication skills for careers in agricultural economics, farm business management, and extension.
  • Outcome: Empowering learners to critically assess real-life problems in their chosen profession.
  • Employment: Graduates find opportunities in government, agribusiness, consultancies, extension projects, education, and entrepreneurship.
  • Lifelong Learning: Promoting continuous education and skills development through various developmental activities.

Outcomes

  1. Communicate effectively with peers, in a variety of modes, in the discourse of Agricultural Economics, Farm Business Management or Extension.
  2. Demonstrate responsible and effective time-management and organization of projects and research, meeting personal objectives and negotiated deadlines.
  3. Interact with increasing self-confidence, as a member of a team or group in a variety of discussion and problem-solving situations in a management environment.
  4. Exhibit a detailed knowledge and understanding of a range of discipline-specific theories, and comprehension of the interactions between Agricultural Economics, Farm Business Management and Extension and the Agricultural environment and the multidisciplinary nature of problems of farm management and extension.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to integrate acquired knowledge and information and apply it to practical farming situations.
  6. Exhibit some of the characteristics or qualities of a life-long learner such as possession of a questioning and critical sense of curiosity, self-motivation, reflection and capability of employing a range of meta-cognitive skills and learning strategies within the learners field of agricultural expertise.
  7. Demonstrate basic computer skills/ literacy

Assessment Criteria

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Class Participation:

    • Participate effectively in class discussions.
    • Write and present mini-seminars.
    • Prepare assignments and participate effectively in oral presentations.
  2. Submission of Reports and Assignments:

    • Submit reports and assignments in an acceptable format according to clear guidelines and deadlines.
  3. Effective Communication:

    • Participate and interact intelligently in class discussions, presentations, and practical situations.
  4. Literature Analysis:

    • Critically read, interpret, and analyze literature.
    • Participate in group discussions.
  5. Land-Use and Farm Management:

    • Prepare and defend a land-use and/or farm management plan.
  6. Demonstrating Characteristics:

    • Demonstrate these characteristics in the range of class and practical activities and tasks.
  7. Computer Skills:

    • Use computers for word processing in the preparation of certain assignments/projects.

Assessment:

  • Integrated assessment will be incorporated to ensure the achievement of the qualification's purpose.
  • Formative and summative assessment methods will be used, including assignments, seminars, practical reports, tests, and exams.
  • New assessment procedures will be aligned with OBE principles as they are mastered by staff and learners.
