Purpose and Rationale

Lifestyle Diseases and the Role of Medical BioScience Qualifications

Lifestyle diseases are the leading cause of mortality in modern society, with conditions such as respiratory disease, diarrhea, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and reproductive infectious diseases being major contributors. The impact of westernization, urbanization, and mass media has significantly altered the lifestyles of African populations, often leading to detrimental effects on their health.

The Role of Science in Understanding Lifestyle Diseases

Science has been instrumental in uncovering the biological mechanisms underlying these diseases. Through scientific research, important insights have been gained into the causes and progression of various lifestyle-related health issues.

Integration in Medical BioScience Qualifications

In the undergraduate Medical BioScience qualification, the theme of health and lifestyle is integrated to emphasize the crucial role of basic science in promoting and understanding health and quality of life. This qualification serves as a foundation for students to delve deeper into the biological aspects of health and disease.

Postgraduate Studies on Lifestyle and Health

The postgraduate Medical BioScience qualification builds upon this foundation by utilizing scientific methodologies to investigate the biological mechanisms behind lifestyle and health issues. By addressing pertinent questions in this area, students gain a better understanding of how lifestyle choices impact health outcomes.

Honours Qualification Objectives

The primary goal of the honours qualification is to provide a strong theoretical basis in research fields within Physiology, Anatomy, and Medical Microbiology. Additionally, the program equips participants with diverse research skills through technique modules and hands-on research projects, preparing them for future research endeavors.

By emphasizing the intersection of science with lifestyle and health, these qualifications empower individuals to make informed decisions regarding their well-being and contribute to the ongoing efforts to combat lifestyle diseases.
