Purpose and Rationale

The B.Com (Hons) is a postgraduate degree that aims to:

  1. Develop postgraduate level knowledge, discipline specific skills and applied competence in Commerce and Industry.
  2. Provide opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful employment and making a rewarding contribution to society.
  3. Empower postgraduates to solve commercial problems in a general and focused way, to effectively manage and allocate resources, to communicate effectively and to contribute to socio-economic transformation in a responsible and ethical manner.
  4. Produce significant numbers of commerce postgraduates, particularly from disadvantaged communities, to ensure that the leadership base of innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activity in South Africa is strengthened and diversified.

Outcomes

  1. Display specialized scholastic and basic Enterprise Management research skills in an Economic and Management Sciences Discipline.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to identify, analyse and solve Enterprise Management and commercial problems in a systematic, critical and creative way.
  3. Acquire a specialised understanding of how to manage enterprise resources and processes in a business context.
  4. Communicate effectively, in oral and written modes, and to articulate and promote own ideas and interests.
  5. Understand and contribute to the socio-economic challenges of developing South Africa in an ethical and responsible manner.

Assessment Criteria

Specialised Enterprise Management and Basic Research Skills

  • Displayed in Economic and Management Sciences or related discipline.

Ability to Identify, Analyse, and Solve Enterprise Management and Commercial Problems

  • Demonstrated in a systematic, critical, and creative way.

Specialised Understanding of Managing Enterprise Resources and Processes

  • Demonstrated in a business context.

Effective Communication

  • Ideas and interests are articulated and promoted through oral and written modes.

Contribution to Socio-Economic Challenges of Developing South Africa

  • Demonstrated in an ethical and responsible manner.

Integrated Assessment

  • Continuous Assessment System with various assessment events throughout the year.
  • Assessment instruments include tests, essays, practical reports, and project reports.
