Purpose and Rationale

Programme Description:

The aim of this programme is to provide an opportunity to students to broaden their knowledge in History within the Faculty of Arts. This provides an opportunity to:

  • Read extensively and become acquainted with some of the classic texts in the History discipline.
  • Engage in conversations with the most important thinkers in the field.
  • Take part in debates with confidence.
  • Build a solid basis for postgraduate research.

This programme not only broadens but also deepens insight in the discipline as specified.

Assessment Criteria for History Course

  1. Demonstrated Knowledge of Scholarly Discourse: Show a wide-ranging and well-integrated understanding of current scholarly discussions in History.

  2. Reading and Interpretation Skills: Exhibit the ability to read and interpret both classic and contemporary History texts effectively.

  3. Clear Expression of Abstract Thoughts: Articulate abstract historical concepts in a clear, logical, and coherent manner through writing.

  4. Literature Survey Reflection: Reflect on the results of an independent literature survey on a selected topic in History, presenting a balanced and coherent analysis.

  5. Research Skills Demonstration: Demonstrate skills required for post-graduate level History research, including the ability to propose and conduct research effectively.

Assessment Methods

  • Examinations: Test understanding of historical concepts and scholarly debates through written exams.

  • Literature Surveys: Conduct independent literature surveys on specific topics and present findings in a structured manner.

  • Research Proposals: Develop research proposals that demonstrate the ability to formulate research questions and design appropriate methodologies.
