Purpose and Rationale

Purpose

The qualification is interwoven with the Postgraduate Diploma in Management (Actuarial Science Conversion). The qualification is designed to provide the opportunity for intensive study in actuarial science. It will include training in concepts and research methods designed to equip the learner with the skills necessary either for employment in public or private sector organisations and to further professional qualification. It will assist learners in developing critical and analytical skills and in dealing with complex issues logically and lucidly. The qualification will prepare learners for further study, locally or abroad, at Masters level in a related subject area.

    • Constructing a catalogue of scholarly works on a subject matter.

    • Applying specialist knowledge to real-life commercial situations in South Africa and globally.

    • Participating in discussions on normative issues relevant to research and business conduct.

Integrated Assessment:

  • Examinations:

    • Closed book exams with around twenty-four hours writing time.
    • Integration of theoretical understanding with practical technicalities.
    • Ability to assimilate information, prepare reasoned responses, and demonstrate technical proficiency.
  • Honours Research Project:

    • Supervised research at the level of a relevant refereed journal.
    • Identifying a clearly defined problem, reviewing literature, outlining methodology and objectives.
    • Depth and thoroughness of research, justification of research problem, and embedding in relevant literature.
    • Systematic and independent approach, in-depth analysis, and supportable conclusions.
    • Assessment of clear and concise writing style.
