Purpose and Rationale

The programme is research-orientated and aims to:

  1. Consolidate and deepen the knowledge acquired in the first degree (BSc, MBChB, or other approved qualification).
  2. Provide advanced study in the chosen field of specialization, expanding and deepening the knowledge base while generating new insights.
  3. Lay the necessary groundwork for students interested in pursuing Master's or Doctoral level studies in the specific field.
  4. Equip students with insight and competence at the molecular, cellular, and applied levels of the chosen field, establishing a solid foundation for independent research through the acquisition of essential research skills and tools.
  5. Develop the scientific and research capabilities of candidates to prepare them for a professional career in independent, medically oriented research.
  6. Foster interest in academic study and research, and cultivate a cadre of well-equipped medical scientists who are professionals, critical thinkers, socially aware individuals, and who can contribute to medical research in South Africa addressing the country's health needs effectively in both public and private sectors.

Outcomes

GENERAL OUTCOMES: The HonsBScMedSc graduate will have:
  10. Confident, systematic and deep knowledge of the theoretical aspects of the subject matter in the chosen area of specialisation and awareness of a variety of contexts in which it may apply
  11. Understanding of the principles and concepts underpinning the field of study and of its boundaries and limitations
  12. An overview of recent, relevant and cutting-edge research in the chosen field
  13. Understanding of the use of the scientific method in the acquisition of scientific equipment, advanced investigative techniques/procedures and experimental approaches
  14. Knowledge of the working and application of a range of applicable scientific equipment, advanced investigative techniques/procedures and experimental approaches
  15. The ability to apply all this knowledge to identify and address new theoretical and practical problems
  16. Ability to communicate scientific knowledge clearly in written and verbal form
  17. Familiarity with the opportunities, challenges, demands and code of conduct of the profession(s) associated with the field of specialisation The HonsBScMedSc graduates will be able to:

  19. Plan and conduct basic research, using appropriate methods for the solving of problems
  20. Justify and explain conclusions within the epistemology of the discipline

SPECIFIC OUTCOMES: The HonsBScMedSc graduate will: Have successfully followed presented study programme, worked independently on prescribed tasks and have participated fully in a research project within the ambit of the interests of the department, in which technical skills, the application of the scientific method and cooperation are fostered

Assessment Criteria

1) Evaluation Criteria for Students:

  • The supervisor evaluates the student based on their efforts to work as part of a research team and complete an independent research project.
  • The student's ability to present a project write-up and oral presentation, as well as successfully complete written examinations, allows them to showcase other applicable abilities.

2) Assessment Methods for Qualification:

  • The assessment methods used for this qualification ensure the achievement of its purpose.
  • A variety of formative and summative assessment methods such as literature reviews, journal article presentations, laboratory supervisor assessments, and written and oral examinations are utilized.
  • A combination of assessment modalities is integrated to determine if the specified outcomes have been met; successful completion of mentioned products indicates the student has achieved the required standard.
  • Generalization from sample assessments to a broader domain is done judiciously and systematically to ensure reliability.
  • The assessment methods align with the standard and level of achievement for NQF level 7.

3) Requirements for HonsBScMedSc Graduate:

  • The HonsBScMedSc graduate will demonstrate:
    1. Capacity for independent study through satisfactory completion of papers and assignments (not necessarily meeting publication criteria but showing potential).
    2. Ability to think epistemologically, evaluating the foundations of thought and knowledge, acknowledging relativity, and recognizing the validity of different positions within a specific frame of reference.
    3. Professional working relationships within the profession or discipline.

4) Passing Criteria for HonsBScMedSc Graduate:

  • The HonsBScMedSc graduate must:
    • Pass with a minimum of 50% earned in written examinations.
    • Deliver an oral/visual presentation followed by questioning on their research.
    • Provide a satisfactory written presentation of their research.
    • Submit an acceptable literature review.
    • Receive a score based on continuous evaluation by the project supervisor and other lecturers.
