Business, Commerce and Management Studies - Generic Management

Purpose and Rationale

The B.Com (Hons) is a postgraduate degree that aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Development of Knowledge and Skills: The program enables learners to acquire postgraduate level knowledge, discipline-specific skills, and applied competence in Commerce and Industry. This equips them for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful employment, and to make a meaningful contribution to society.

  2. Problem-Solving and Resource Management: Graduates are empowered to address commercial problems in a general and focused manner. They learn how to efficiently manage and allocate resources, communicate effectively, and contribute to socio-economic transformation in a responsible and ethical manner.

  3. Diversity and Inclusivity: The program seeks to provide South Africa with a significant number of commerce postgraduates, especially from disadvantaged communities. This effort aims to strengthen and diversify the leadership base of innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activities in the country.

Outcomes

  1. Display specialised scholastic and Management skills in an Economic and Management Sciences Discipline.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to identify, analyse and solve Management and commercial problems in a systematic, critical and creative way.
  3. Acquire specialised understanding of how to manage Management resources and processes in a business context.
  4. Communicate effectively, in oral and written modes, and to articulate and promote own ideas and interests.
  5. Understand and contribute to the socio-economic challenges of developing South Africa in an ethical and responsible manner.

Assessment Criteria

  1. Specialised management skills and basic research skills are displayed in Economic and Management Sciences or related disciplines.
  2. The ability to identify, analyse, and solve management and commercial problems is demonstrated in a systematic, critical, and creative way.
  3. A specialised understanding of how to manage management resources and processes is demonstrated in a business context.
  4. Ideas and interests are articulated and promoted through effective communication in oral and written modes.
  5. An in-depth understanding and contribution to the socio-economic challenges of developing South Africa is demonstrated in an ethical and responsible manner.

Integrated assessment: The Faculty has adopted a Continuous Assessment System. Assessment consists of a number of assessment events administered throughout the year, and a variety of assessment instruments are used (for example: tests, essays, and practical reports, project reports).
